In spite of 3 stars (which is not bad!) I would give five stars to chapter 1, "How the Quest Begins" - this is excellent for anyone beginning or in the middle of searching for their slave ancestors. This book is also a fine example of how a family history can be laid out - photos and images (such as ones for censuses) really added to the book. Including the oral histories the author had taken some years before was a good choice - even though not my family, they were fascinating to read. Overall, I did not read the entire book, which makes it perhaps wrong for me to review it. However, I wanted others to be aware of that well done first chapter - if that's all you read of this book and the rest you just leaf through - you will still have learned significant information to help you with your own quest.… (meer)
