Arthur Kendal Whitehead

The foreword to Col. Whitehead's book reads, "This is an account of my experiences as a young cavalry officer in the Philippine Islands during the WWII years of 1941, 1942 and 1943. It is a period of my life on which I look back with a mixed feeling of awe and fascination, often wondering by what criteria the Almighty chooses those who will survive and those who will not." Col. Whitehead was one of the many left behind in the catastrophic fall of the Philippines to the Japanese forces in 1942; he was one of the few who survived. By slowly making his way south from island to island, he was finally able to reach Australia almost two years after the fall of Bataan.
