This is a fantasy tale of magic, wizards, dragons, councils, talking cats, druids, and mermaids. (Hopefully I got it all in there.)

Edgar is apprenticed to his uncle, the great wizard Mangnus. He is thrilled with the lifestyle and role that he is to play in his life. Being a wizard and travelling is more exciting than living in a city and settling down. The girl who he has had an eye on for years is finally paying attention to him because of his elevated status as a wizard apprentice. There is no zing and that relationship falls flat before it begins.

We meet Adelaide, she apprenticed to the herbalist, Hestia. Women are not allowed to have magical abilities. It is illegal. Adelaide is taken to a ball and while being kissed exhibits magical abilities. Major problems and cover up are in order. There are two, possibly three romantic interests for Adelaide at the beginning of the story. But when she shows magical abilities, her life changes and so do her prospects.

The paths of Edgar, Adelaide, Mangnus and Hestia converge when they work together to help the magic of the kingdom. There are several sparks that begin to fly and not all of them are magical. Well, love could be considered magical.

Overall, this is a very fun story. The language is simple and easy to follow. The character and plot development could have used some polishing. If you want a light read this is a great book.

I do have a content warning. While this story is simple and almost whimsical, there are a few sexual situations that are not described, just present.

Sweet book. Not bad for the Tween set. Follow te adventure os Magnus the Wizard and his nephew/apprentice Edgar with the herbalist Hestia and her apprentice Adelaide as they face adventure trying to return magic back to their land. Not a bad read though I though Adelaid and Edgar were fast-fowarded to their relationship a little quickly and would have like to see more interplay to understand why she would like him so much. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon in the sun.

K.D. WILSON'S "SHADES OF MAGIC" (REVIEW)

This was an enchanting story of a young man named Edgar as he became apprentice to his uncle 'Gus' a renowned wizard of the land and Adelaide the apprentice of a local herbalist. At once a love story as well as a story of achieving ones dreams, this is a well-written fantasy novel for both youths and adults. I enjoyed it!

Edgar is a typical young adult, he has no idea what he wants to do with his life however, he knows he doesn't want to be a farmer. When he has the opportunity to travel with his uncle, and master magician Magnus, he jumps at the opportunity. Adelaide is apprenticed to an herbalist in a world where women are not allowed to use magic. Half-way through the story, the reader discovers that magic is fading. In order to fix magic, Edgar, Magnus, Adelaide and Hesita, the herbalist, travel on a journey to recover a vitality shard. Half of the book past before the plot line actually started. Once the characters discovered that magic was failing, they undertook an extremely simple journey to solve the problem. The dangers and encounters of the journey were extremely simplistic and very easy to overcome. Overall, I thought this book was a bust.… (meer)
