In the Preface to the 1954 First Edition, cited in this the Fourth, Witkin states the philosophy behind the Treatises which guide the publication:
CRITICAL -- Case law is examined on principle, exposing conflicts of decision, indicating trends.
SELECTIVE -- Important and controversial problems are emphasized, with leading cases apt in illustration and review.
PRACTICAL -- Organized to present procedural steps chronologically, with reference and accumulation of practice suggestions from decisions.
COMPREHENSIVE -- Coverage of every branch of procedure, with reference to substantive law.
READABLE -- Presented plainly and concretely. {Of course, it is "law" that is being presented -- innately gray areas.}… (meer)

"One of the elements of a fair trial is the right to offer relevant and competent evidence on a material issue." [618] Denial is usually reversible error. But it happens all the time simply because attorneys fail to attend to the proper procedures or the judges are burned out by the purduration of the presentation.
