For all that I have a professed interest in Penguin books, I did not know that Edinburgh University is the place to go to see the biggest collection of first editions.

This unlikely scenario, Edinburgh being about as far from Exeter (where the books were first conceived) as it is possible to get within the British Isles; came about because a gentleman bearing the name Kenneth Ryrie bequeathed his library to the university. Mr. Ryrie had a healthy collection of Penguin books, many in their first Penguin edition and so, a collection was formed. One more reason to add Edinburgh to the places that I must visit.½

Histories do not have to be long and wordy. This book is just 49 pages and has ample illustration and yet, it is an excellent history of the Penguin Book Company. All the information is there, the most notable titles form some of the images and this is an excellent starter biography of the Penguin. I am surprised that it has not been taken on by Penguin and released to a larger audience: it certainly deserves so to be.
