A strange book. I felt odd that the author himself was not South American, nor had he appeared to live in a Latin American country (although he has lived in other developing nations). Parts of the novel were almost slapstick, and others (such as the murders of several children) were brutal. The author played light and fast with indigenous culture and magic, without assigning it to any particular cultural group; he apparently used "real" prayers but did not name the nations / tribes from which those prayers originated.
