Karl Zinsmeister spent three months embedded in combat zones with U.S. soldiers during the first year of the Iraq war. In 2003 he published Boots on the Ground: A Month with the 82nd Airborne in the Battle for Iraq. Zinsmeister is editor in chief of The American Enterprise, He is also the J. B. toon meer Fuqua Fellow at Washington, D.C.'s American Enterprise Institute. His writing has appeared in publications like the Atlantic Monthly, Reader's Digest, the Wall Street Journal, and even a Marvel comic-book series of real-life soldiers' tales. A graduate of Yale University and Trinity College, Dublin, and a former assistant to U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, he has testified before congressional committees and presidential commissions numerous times, and appears regularly on television and radio programs. This book is a wonderful collection of stories, snapshots from people's everyday lives. Funny ones, happy ones, sad ones, but all REAL ones. All of these stories originally appeared in a nationally known magazine called The American Enterprise, and have been lovingly edited and presented in this precious book.

As I read these simple true stories of the lives of others like myself, I felt warmed and happy and reaffirmed that America is not all horror or glitz and glamor. This was one of those books that I just couldn't put down and I am sure I will return to it often and plan on passing the stories on to others to help revive their hope and faith in everyday people.
