Over mijn bibliotheek
I was a genuine bibliographical connoisseur with a strong and nearly lifelong fascination with books as physical objects. My letters and diaries are filled with observations on book illustration, collecting, fine bindings, paper, and other bookish lore. My bibliophilia in turn led me to a healthy concern with the design and appearance of my own published works.

Manuscripts of all my novels (except for two), much correspondence, and the entire contents of my personal library, including some of the furniture and works of art, came to the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, Texas in 1967. The Ransom Center's collection of my first editions was completed in 2006 with the addition of my suppressed pamphlet An Open Letter to His Eminence the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster (1933), thought to exist in only a single copy.
Over mij
28 October 1903 – 10 April 1966

I was a novelist. A literary friend of mine once delivered a summation which neatly reflects the tenor of the anecdotes about me. As nearly as I recall, it went: " Oh, I adore Evelyn. He's so frightfully witty and so fearfully rude. Terribly conceited, of course -- and, poor sweet, rather ridiculous. But such a good writer!"

As far as writing goes: "I put the words down and push them a bit."

"The greatest English novelist of the century" -- William F. Buckley, Jr.

"Our time's first satirist." -- Gore Vidal
