My favorite novels tend to be fantasies and mysteries written for children, young adults or adults. The reason that most of the books on my list are so highly rated is that I'm only sharing my favorite ones, the ones I've read repeatedly. And I'm not necessarily talking about quality so much as that sheer Velveteen Rabbit kind of love: these books have become real to me.

I'm not sure how many thousands of books I've read, but my pace has slowed down quite a bit now that I'm trying to write them as well. I have two middle grade novels out, SAVING THE GRIFFIN and DEFENDING IRENE, and a third on the way. Since one is a fantasy for younger middle grade readers, another is a sports novel for upper middle grade readers and the third is a YA mystery, my editor at Peachtree has politely suggested that I think about picking a major.
