Right now I am reading Stumbling on happiness by Daniel Gilbert. I am only half way through it, but I am recommending it for all my friends.

Gilbert is a psychologist, and the book is about how our brain functions and is dysfunctional, and how we get so used to the dysfunctions that we don't even notice them.

He has a humorous writing style ("If we adhere to the standard of perfection in all our endeavors, we are left with nothing but mathematics and the White Album" and later he "measures" the happiness of people given either a million dollars or a pistol, to see if happiness really is a warm gun).

I am still unclear as to his overall premise, (something about happiness) and sometimes he sacrifices content for clarity, his examples are always very clear and informative, and often very surprising.

I have recently read Field Notes on the Compassionate Life and would recommend it. A more unconventional and surprising choice would be Paolini's Eragon trilogy. For such a young writer he has some interesting things to say on fate and destiny.
By way of introduction, I am a Ki Gong student from Tampa.
