Amulet: Book One, The Stonekeeper (2008) by Kazu Kibuishi
Amulet is a dark, multi-faceted adventure of a graphic novel, set in present time. The central character is Emily Hayes, who with her brother Navin and mother move to their great-grandfather’s old house in order to move on from their father’s death (which is shown in the prologue). What follows is an adventure in Alledia, an alternate version of Earth. The illustrations are gorgeous and imaginative, and the narrative is well-paced and written. In the library where I work, we can’t keep these books on our shelves. Highly recommended for ages 9 and older.

Babymouse Burns Rubber (2010) by Jennifer L. and Matthew Holm
The story follows young Babymouse, anxious to enter a derby race with the help of her friend, Wilson. The story fluctuates between Babymouse in school and her daydreams. The 12th Babymouse in the series, though the first one I’ve read, Babymouse Burns Rubber is a fun graphic novel for young readers; adults will find Babymouse’s daydreams entertaining as well (one scene parodies Star Wars—but admits it’s not as cool without the music). Readers will enjoy Babymouse’s curiosity and gumption. Recommended.
