Reeves, P. (2009). No such thing as dragons. New York, NY: Scholastic Press.

No Such Thing as Dragons is a book you can’t put down! It’s entertaining from the start, with language that is descriptive, original, and lively. The story of Johannes Von Brock – otherwise known simply as Brock – and his young, mute servant Ansel trek from town to town in a grand charade of being dragon-hunters. While Ansel tries not to “really” believe in dragons, and Brock assures him that there is “no such thing” – it becomes another matter when they reach a towering mountain named the Drachenberg. Here, as they say, the plot thickens, and the story begins to move full speed ahead. This wonderfully told tale of adventure will entice the most reluctant reader and engage even those who might typically eschew fantasy stories. It received recognition as an Outstanding International Book for Children in 2011 and would be an excellent addition to any collection of legendary dragon tales. It is a captivating story for children in grades 3 – 6. A must-read fantasy!

Doeden, M. (2008). Dragon Life. Mankato, MN: Capstone Press

Here is a short handbook of information – essentially everything one needs to know about dragons! It is brief enough to read quickly, yet comprehensive enough to be a good guide to dragon fantasies. This book contains a useful table of contents, a photo glossary and an index. Furthermore, each section fully describes the habitat, physical characteristics, and behavior of eleven different kinds of dragons. The easy-to-read format combined with detailed, color illustrations and supplemental links to related websites make this a fun resource for students in grades 3 and up.
