Trains
Author- Lynn Curlee
Publication date 2009

Unique nonfiction book about the development of trains and their impact on this country's progress. Rather than an encyclopedia on train facts, this book reads as prose and would absolutely entrance young readers with the vivid, sensory details that soak each page. Minimalist acrylic paintings in vibrant colors would appeal to a wide audience. This could easily become a favorite bedtime read. Author also illustrated and created cover art for Black Sabbath! Grades 1-6.

In the Belly of an Ox: The Unexpected Photographic Adventures of Richard and Cherry Kearton
Author- Rebecca Bond
Publication date 2009

Picture book story about brothers Richard and Cherry Kearton's quest to publish the first nature book ever. The brothers used unheard of techniques- like building a fake ox in which to stand inside- in order to take pictures of birds. Author also illustrates in fluid watercolors with multiple panels on a single page. Technically this is a biography but it reads much like a fictional piece. Grades 2-4.

Soft illustrations in vibrant colors capture Neruda's Latin American roots. Grades 4-6.

Great Inventions of the 20th Century
Author- Peter Jedicke
Publication date 2007

Filled with short explanations of the most important inventions of the 20th century, this book would be a great resource for a science or social studies unit in a school. Explanations are written for an older audience and mention complex scientific principles only in passing. It might require a secondary resource just to understand the explanations given in this one. Adequate bibliography and index provided. Appropriate for grades 5-8.
