“Working Animals: Military” by Robert Grayson (2011)
This is a beginning chapter book 2nd-5th graders. It covers the history of animals in the military, what jobs animals can do, as well as what jobs people in the military have working with animals. The book includes highlighted vocabulary words that are defined in a glossary in the back of the book, an index, and a “Further Reading” section. Some of the animals discussed in the book are dogs, elephants, horses, camels, pigeons, rats (used for mine detection), dolphins and sea lions (used for under water mine detection, among other services), sheep and goats (used to eat brush to help control forest fires), and donkeys. This book provides an interesting view of all the animals used in the military as well as possible job opportunities for animal lovers.
