OK, I know we're all recovered by now, but what did you do during the blackout on Thursday, September 8th? I read! Got out my Mighty Bright book light, loaded it with 4 AA batteries and got reading. It was great.

Strikes me as ironic that in the land of yoga, we could all benefit from an enforced time out. It really was nice, and the sky was amazing.

What did you do/read during the blackout?

Like you, WordMaven, first I happily shared my extra candles, batteries and hurricane lamps with less prepared neighbors, then I settled in my favorite reading chair with my booklight and Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Guyenne - a fascinating history of the Comanche people. I had KOGO on in the background on my battery operated radio, just in case there was some information I needed to know.
Glad I listened, or I would have missed the notice for us to boil water in the Scripps Ranch/Mira Mesa/Rancho Penasquitos area.

Thanks for replying, GlendaHam. You rock! I was one of the unprepared and had to borrow batteries from a neighbor. I listened to KOGO, too! It was the only station I could get.

Once I learned that the blackout was so widespread, I turned off the radio and just settled in for reading. We went out around 11 pm to visit a buddy, and the view of San Diego Bay was beautiful. I could see all the lights on the airport tarmac and a few ships lit up in the Bay. Great stuff.

I kind of miss our little blackout. :-(

During the night, I took a break from reading also, but I went out in the back yard with my trusty telescope and actually looked at the stars without any interference from the "city lights'... they were awesome!"!!

The thing I liked the best about the blackout was how all the neighbors came together in our cul-de-sac. During the afternoon, one Dad, when he found out it was widespread. brought out all his ice cream bars and other frozen goodies and passed them out to all the neighborhood children - both big and small :-)

We also quickly realized that some cell phone services were no longer functioning, so some neighbors shared their cell phones so people could check on family and friends. I could "text" with Verizon, but phone calls went straight to message.

Best way to make friends in a hurry? FREE ice cream!

Well, I had just finished a book, didn't have a new one to read...and my husband had just gotten back from being gone doing military stuff. He was literally home five minutes before the power went out. Welcome home, honey! LOL We just played board games and took our little one to the park. Hubby fried a Lean Pocket in a frying pan on the stove, he was so desperate for something other than ships food, hahahaha!
