What's that noise, a screwdriver or a hedgehog? Either way, it sounds like "sonic."

There are obviously a huge number of words ending in the suffix -ic, so I'd recommend guesses that form a two-syllable rhyme with "sonic" or else we'll be here a very long time. (Of course, the rhyming words can be more than two syllables.)

4 - That demonic lawyer, advocatus diaboli,
Drafts Satan's contracts none too shabbily.
As primus inter pares, he reigns well
O'er all the other lawyers found in hell.

5 - Verbis defectis musica incipit;
I'm not sure on "unstressed," and so I'll skip it.
Symphonic and harmonic I adore,
Yet, horribile dictu, half the store
Sells cacophonic blare, sung sloppily;
Alas, their sales reflect vox populi.

6 - Tectonic forces slowly get their way:
Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re.

Thus terra firma turns to terra nova.

Instead, mens sana in corpore reo.

18b - "In utero" once made me contemplate
A tiny babe in embryonic state.
O tempora, o mores! Now the phrase
Just makes me think of Cobain's golden days.

19a - Cogito ergo sum, and yet I rue
The fact the converse clearly isn't true,
For morons do exist; you can't ignore 'em:
Infinitus est numerus stultorum.

19b - Though phallic is well-known, most don't know there is

Some shady tricks to fool the eyes.
The import's a junker: its brakes are shot;

And yet its glossy wax job often hooks
A buyer based on how the Fiat lux.

I have a feeling that there is a clue or clues in the Latin insertions, especially since the rhymes require occasional modification of traditional pronunciation. Could Crambo's word refer to rules that govern how a particular phoneme is pronounced in different contexts?

Second guess: wouldn't it be, um, amusing in a certain way if I'm looking way too deeply for a clue?

29buckjohnson

25a - An autochthonic people might protest
The status quo if they have been oppressed:
"Why do the colonizers like to bully us
With specious doctrines such as terra nullius?"

25b - Lux e tenebris, says the Scottish Rite.
Masonic lore is highly recondite
So, ipso facto, it gets fearful looks
From some who see tenebrae more than lux.
That's not the kind of fame I bet you want
Unless it's oderint dum metuant.

26 - Ibid., 18c, I think? If not, let me know.

28a - There is a clue-cum-theme, I must admit.
Alas, poeta nascitur, non fit,
And so my allophonic rhymes might shock:
That's not intended, just a bit ad hoc.

28b - When Caesar uttered iacta alea est,
He spawned a saying that's become iconic,
And though his act Fortuna Brevis blessed,
Its almost-homophone is quite ironic.
By letting his ambition rule the day
And risking all he had, it's no affront
To note he threw all other things away
And might have said that iacta alia sunt.

Minus the prefix, part of thisʻs
Already in the " nots", whether cheers or hisses
Greet me for the reminder.
Greek, the origin of this, but you wonʻt find ʻer
Much in Greek texts; they were much more
Straightforward, and thought it was a bore
To be too __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ in oneʻs
Speech much like being __ __ __ __emistic; the funʻs
In the talking about the bad --smoothly to be
Sure -- but with what you might hear or see
Emphasizing the substance, not the sound
(though I remember that Isocrates, the orator, around
1950, was dissed by Prof. Sterling Dow for his in-
-sistence on __ __ __ __ __ __ y). (Iʻll yell "gin!"
Now, just as if Iʻd won this round of the game;
Bu if I havenʻt, thanks all the same.

Ave, James, and yes indeed! Crambo's word was macaronic, referring to verse that mixes two languages, usually Latin and a vernacular. Macaronic verse often features contrived inter-language rhymes for humorous effect, and it may include bilingual puns.
