I'm thinking of a word that rhymes with 'hard'

Sounds fishy to me.

No it's not pilchard

I wasn't aware of pilchards. Undoubtedly my guess is still wrong, but it's actually a very birdlike fish. Its common name is the sea robin.

It shouldn't be so hard

Welcome starbox. My first meal in Paris started with a duck's stony stomach! Not quite what I though I was ordering!

Might I hoist myself upon it?

I am all broken up over this.

#4 That's interesting, I thought pilchards (tinned, served on toast) were a worldwide delicacy! No, it's not gurnard
#5 Nor a bard
# Nor a (canard?)
#7 Nor a petard

Alpha: bard, canard, gurnard, petard, pilchard

10rodneyvc
mei 2, 2013, 7:39 am

#9 No - the muscular stomach pouch filled with grit.

An open area surrounded by walls or buildings?

11starbox
mei 2, 2013, 7:45 am

#9 No, it's not a gizzard (this sure is an educational game! I've just been researching bird anatomy!)
Nor a yard

Alpha: bard, (canard), gizzard, gurnard, petard, pilchard, yard

O Canada we stand on this for thee!

13starbox

No, it's not guard

Alpha: bard, (canard), gizzard, guard, gurnard, petard, pilchard, yard

I'm still all broken up over this.

15starbox

No it's not shard

Alpha: bard, canard, gizzard, guard, gurnard, petard, pilchard, yard

My brain isn't working at full speed.

17starbox

No, it's not retard.

Alpha: bard, canard, gizzard, guard, gurnard, petard, pilchard, retard, yard.

Is it all in the rendering?

19brightcopy

Is it a vegetable that is sometimes "Swiss"?

20starbox
mei 2, 2013, 4:18 pm

#No it's not lard
#Nor chard

(It's 2 syllables)
Alpha: bard, canard, chard, gizzard, guard, gurnard, lard, petard, pilchard, retard, yard

21brightcopy
mei 2, 2013, 4:30 pm

Well, I'll never stop trying to guess the answer.

22starbox
mei 2, 2013, 4:44 pm

You're such a diehard!

Alpha: bard, canard, chard, diehard gizzard, guard, gurnard, lard, petard, pilchard, retard, yard

Tsk, tsk, tsk, Counselor. You're in trouble now.

Or a release from the military.

26starbox
mei 3, 2013, 3:22 pm

#23 Sorry, I'm stumped! Give me another clue!
#24 No it's not dullard, or dotard or backward
#25 nor (debarred?)

Alpha: backward, bard, canard, chard, debarred, diehard, dotard, dullard gizzard, guard, gurnard, lard, petard, pilchard, retard, yard

NB When I came up with canard, I really thought we were on to something...

My attorney did something unethical and illegal. His punishment.

28starbox

#27 Disbarred?

29brightcopy
mei 3, 2013, 3:42 pm

#25> Actually, now I'm feeling like the dullard... I think I was going for "discharged" but god only knows why since it doesn't really rhyme with "hard" unless you squint. It's skoodin froody all over again. Okay, replacement guess:

Is it a scoundrel or villain, in an English sort of way?

30starbox
mei 3, 2013, 3:46 pm

#29 No, it's neither dastard nor bastard!

Alpha: backward, bard, bastard, canard, chard, dastard, debarred, diehard, dotard, dullard gizzard, guard, gurnard, lard, petard, pilchard, retard, yard

31IWantToBelieve
mei 3, 2013, 3:49 pm

#28 you got it star.

32brightcopy

#29> I was thinking more of one of those words you folks pronounce completely different than you spell it. :D

33starbox
mei 3, 2013, 4:00 pm

#29 Oh, blackguard? Talking of English terms for things put me in mind of a German friend I used to have - her English was brilliant as she spent all her time reading the classics, but on one of her trips over here she asked me sadly "When the taxi driver took the wrong route and I called him a nincompoop, why did he laugh at me?" !! Also of an American penpal to whom I wrote when my ex and I were getting divorced, saying he was seeing a solicitor - and received back a torrent of sympathy from someone who thought he was visiting a courtesan!

34brightcopy
mei 3, 2013, 4:10 pm

(And yet, when you put a "No Soliciting" sign on your door here it means yet a third thing.)

I misread #31 to be a clue at first. So I'm making it one:

In school, gold stars are often given out as a _____.

35Tid
mei 3, 2013, 4:11 pm

Like, is it bearded?

36starbox
mei 3, 2013, 4:13 pm

No, it's not reward

To re-iterate clue given earlier, canard wasn't so far off the mark

Alpha: backward, bard, bastard, canard, chard, dastard, debarred, diehard, dotard, dullard gizzard, guard, gurnard, lard, petard, pilchard, retard, reward, yard

Perhaps I have a green head, or perhaps I perform autopsies.

mei 4, 2013, 3:41 pm

#37 Thankyou for telling me I'm 'wizard', but that's not it.
#38 YES!! It's a MALLARD. Not sure about the autopsies - nothing to do with 'graveyard'?

40Tid

You didn't get mine at all, Starbox

41kathi
mei 4, 2013, 3:58 pm

On my side of the pond there is a very popular and long-running TV show called NCIS. One the featured characters is Dr. Donald Mallard who is a pathologist and who does at least one autopsy in every episode. Of course, his nickname is "Ducky."

Do I now have to start the next round? It's been a few years since I've played Crambo.

42starbox
mei 4, 2013, 4:07 pm

Oh I do apologize Tid; I'm guessing yours was also 'wizard'?
Kathi; I've checked out NCIS and apparently it is on TV over here but I've never seen it. Next round down to you.

#37 was "regard"
