No chat on this year's Wimbledon... Hmm. Maybe Bartoli's victory elicited no more surprise than Djoke vs Murray in the Men's Final?

I kept meaning to post but other things got in the way. Thought it was an incredible tournament in many ways - first with Nadal going out and then the first Wednesday when players were literally dropping like flies, and then Lisicki coming back to beat Williams.

I thought the women's final could have been a classic but Lisicki completely froze - she was crying in the second set and by the time she had pulled herself together it was all over. It's time to make the women play 5 set finals, 2 sets can just disappear in a flash.

The men's final was the one most people wanted given the draw. The final was a little odd, despite being only three sets the match did go to-and-fro and the British public got the winner (most of) wanted. (I do think Djokovic was a little affected by the Del Potro match which was incredible - although it is a case of swings-and-roundabouts, Murray was affected by his SF in the Australian final earlier this year) The coverage is unbelievable here, mind you after 77 years perhaps it is a little understandable.

I wonder if this tournament represents the real changing of the guard in men's tennis - Djokovic & Murray have contested 3 of the last 4 GS finals. Watching Nadal's defeat it was obvious that his knees are still bothering him which questions his ability to compete fully in 3 of the 4 majors and it's beginning to look like Federer's time may have passed, he's dropped to No.5 in the rankings so the draws are only going to get harder for him - although he may have one more magical moment left in him like Sampras did in the US Open. It's also about time for some of the younger players like Tomic and Janowicz to really start to break through. Strange how tennis has gone from a young person's game where players often peaked in their early twenties to mid/late twenties - the sheer physicality of the men's game now seems to mitigate against teenagers bursting onto the scene. (Not quite sure why the same is happening in the women's game though).

Great summary, Jargoneer. Rushed for time now, but I agree with everything you said. With the addition that I was happy for Bartoli, and her celebration of rejoining human (tennis) society. I always liked her quirkiness and ferocity.

Also, I was on pins-and-needles that last game of Murray-Djoke, wondering whether Murray would have enough to come back if a reinvigorated Djoke won that game! Very happy for him, and all of you guys! :)

>4 Jargoneer: - One of the most bizarre outcomes of this year is that the BBC have had to apologise to Bartoli after one of their reporters said -
"Do you think Bartoli's dad told her when she was little: 'You're never going to be a looker, you'll never be a Sharapova, so you have to be scrappy and fight'?"

To which Bartoli responded, with class
It doesn't matter, honestly. I am not blond, yes. That is a fact. Have I dreamt about having a model contract? No. I'm sorry.
But have I dreamed about winning Wimbledon? Absolutely, yes.

With class indeed. What a boor, that reporter. His comment was reported here, but not her rejoinder.
