In humor writing, form becomes content. With Salinger, even tragedy has the tone of humor. It's a unique style -- maybe coming out of the New Yorker's great, unsung editor Gus Lobrano, who also edited Cheever stories of john cheever I believe. Maybe E. B. White too, if you can imagine editing him. But the early wit, very Lardner-esque collected stories of ring lardner. Nine Stories is beyond sublime. It kicks off with Bananafish and, in my opinion, goes up from there. "Just Before the War with the Eskimos," "The Laughing Man," "For Esme with Love and Squalor," he was sui generis if you ask me. Hollywood's best on the page. Entertaining and life changing at the same time. Roth Goodbye Columbus comes close.
