I just became aware of a new website being developed for knitters and crocheters, ravelry.com (sorry I don't know how to make a link). It's not ready for operation yet, but, as I understand it, will be a little bit like LT for yarn stashers. Sounds like we will be able to organize all of our yarn, needles, and patterns. And a social component that will allow posting pictures of projects, and getting feedback, and sharing information and patterns. (I hope I've understood this all correctly!) You might want to visit their site, which gives some general information about their plans.

Hmmm, very intriguing; I put my name in the list, although I don't know how much time I'll spend there. I love craftster.org, and spend too much time looking at other people's projects (instead of working on my own) as it is!

9nohrt4me
jul 25, 2007, 8:23 am

I do look at some knitting sites (knitty.com) for yarn deals and free pattern ideas. But I find them somewhat overwhelming. It's why I don't shop at Wal*Mart (well, other than that Wal*Mart is the AntiChrist).

But maybe like the rest of the over-50 crowd, I still like a knitting pattern magazine I can look at in bed.

For talking about projects, I really like this list, because it drags in the other contemplative arts--reading, listening to music, bitching about your spouse, fantasizing about which Harry Potter character you'd go on a date with--that go along with knitting.

So just a plea for everyone to keep this thread vital and not run over to ravelry.com and leave me all alone talking to myself ...

I'm actually a beta member, though I haven't added all that much of my stash or projects to the site. The site design is great, very smooth, and I think you will like it when you get log ins.

11MaggieO
jul 25, 2007, 9:24 am

I won't be leaving LT, nohrt4me. I'm more of a book person than I am a knitter. Mostly I am interested in the organizing aspect of Ravelry - it'd be nice to have a way to check on what yarn I have without going through 4 large containers and a bunch of smaller ones. Every single time I want to knit something.
Not that I mind getting my hands on all that lovely stuff, but being so disorganized makes my head feel all wooly.

12sammimag
jul 25, 2007, 10:47 am

I'll stick around because I like the connections of both my love for reading and fiber stuff.

I know I will like ravelry when I get on because so often I've found I like a project I can discounted when I see a pic of a finished one on a real body!

I love visuals.

Am I right too that we could keep track of wims in it as well? Would it allow you to print out info to take with you when you are ready to buy yarn?

13emily_morine
jul 25, 2007, 4:31 pm

For me, no site could ever compete with LibraryThing, ever. But I'm looking forward to having Ravelry too, as a cataloguing function for finished projects. I feel those people who say that they already spend too much time on the internet, though - sing it, sisters.

14Marensr
jul 25, 2007, 4:37 pm

It looks like it could be a great site when it is up and running and accessible to all. I like the idea of seeing photos of projects- and on real people.

#9 I won't be going abandoning LT. I think there is something reassuring about being able to see someone's books. It makes everyone on LT seem so much more trustworthy. I don't know why that is.

I also like the way the discussions wander.

By the way did you finish Deathly Hallows yet? You just might get your rehabilitated special someone stopping by to make you tea as you knit. (I don't think that's spoiling anything for anyone.)

#11 I am also too bookish. I have taken to perusing other people's libraries for ideas before I go book shopping - dangerous - I suppose raverlry could become that too though. . .

Really if my only addictions are books, tea, pottery and knitting it is not so bad is it?

15nohrt4me
jul 25, 2007, 7:01 pm

Whew! Glad people will still be here to talk about knitting and related.

#14: Our copies of "Deathly Hallows" arrived at 9:30 a.m. Saturday thanks to our RFD mail lady who got up early to make sure we all got our books day-of-release, and I screamed like girl when my son brought me my copy.

This time I bought copies for everybody in the family because everybody's old enough to read it for themselves in one big hog wallow (I was done at 2 a.m. Sunday).

I was afraid if we did the normal family read-aloud, somebody would blab and tell us what happened before we were done.

16Marensr
jul 25, 2007, 7:30 pm

#15

I got it a little after midnight at a bookstore party and finished at about 9:00 pm Saturday in a bit of a haze. I must admit it was fun to see a whole neighborhood of people dressed up and lining up to get a book.

Wise to get everyone a copy. I am just starting the read aloud with my fiance. Now if I can get him to read so I can knit. . .

Yes, I'm on Ravelry. I think it's worth signing up for -- the organization is great, and it's a great place to log your stash, patterns, needles, wish list, etc. Let me know what other kind of info you are looking for.

So far, I'm finding Ravelry fascinating & useful for researching patterns and seeing FOs in various yarns. I am not likely to duplicate my LT catalog on Ravelry, nor my stash (which I have cataloged on Flickr). I think the community side of Ravelry is its strength, along with pattern sharing.

I've been on Ravelry now for a couple of months. I really enjoy it (as with LT, it satisfies my love of data entry). I also like being able to see certain patterns that have been made by others. Some of it is inspiring, and sometimes, it can help me avoid shelling out megabucks on yarn for a project I might not be happy with. I highly recommend it!

34Marensr
okt 1, 2007, 2:05 pm

So as a preliminary review I think it will be a fun and useful site. They can't load all my books yet only the ones they have in Ravelry so older books, vintage stuff and even som dover books that appear in LT aren't there.

I also think there will be some up front work. Photographing projects, yarn etc. to put it in my workbook. But that is much like putting my 1000+ books into Librarything.

I will always like our knitters group here more than the specific groups there for general questions and discussions of things apart from knitting but I think I'll find the Chicago group useful for sales and events and like the idea of trolling through other people's projects.

It is also giving me crazy ideas like taking up spinning and hand dying my own yarns.

Anyone else have thoughts on it?

I'm loving ravelry, and can't wait to see what features they add on next! I'm a total "list" geek, so listing things (such as my books here, or my stash there) is totally up my alley!

I love their pattern database, although I still think it needs a few features to make it more useful and less of a nuisance :)

I actually got motivated to start back on some more knitting again (I get stalled rather easily!), and even cast on my first sock thanks to it! :D

I'm looking for a weaving class. Have had no luck here in L.A. but I'm relocating soon and hope to have better luck.

Even though I'm in Ravelry, I've yet to really investigate enough to say more than I think it will be useful to me, especially in keeping up with the name of yarns and size of needles I'm using on projects.

There is a way to upload your books using LT info. I just don't understand how you do it. So I am entered them manually. The library isn't a priority right now and there are lots of missing books.

Hi, I'm new here, (actually I found LibraryThing through Ravelry), so I just thought I'd introduce myself and ask for some advice. A week or so ago I finally got on and I love Ravelry but I'm afraid I'm too stupid to figure out how to link or whatever to my flickr account... It says to put in my screen name and I do (it's woolylogic, it even says so on flickr) but nothing happens, it says woolylogic on my Ravelry page but it doesn't actually connect to flickr or allow me to get any of my pictures. I don't really know what to do, any suggestions? It's sort of embarrassing to have my first post here be a stupid question, but I'm sort of at my wits end, so there is help for it.

You need to make sure your pictures in flickr are marked as "public." I created a Knitting set that I made public - that's where I keep all my pictures for Ravelry. If you click the Help tab in Ravelry, you should be able to find more instruction. Also, there is a help group.

I just got my invite today, after a month of waiting. I'm so excited! There are a couple of local groups there, and it is so easy to check patterns, add ideas, etc. I haven't added all my yarn yet, but I have put three projects in my queue, added most of my needles, and put in 3 projects I've got on needles (out of 4). SO easy to use!

In fact, that's how I found out about LibraryThing, since they use LibraryThing to update your Ravelry library. So, I signed up for both today.

Now if I can just get the $25 for the lifetime membership....I've only got about 1/4 of my books entered, and I'm already half-way through the allotment. Typical. I'd hate to see what it'd be like if I hadn't purged my books a couple of years ago....

Hadn't checked my home email for a while, but when I did, I found my invite to Ravelry. There are some great knitters on there. The photos of completed projects are amazing - worth joining for that alone.

The links to yarn manufacturers are very helpful for obtaining info on yarns that are in production.

I tried to enter some data, and found the user interface to be clunky and limited.

In the chart for needles, you can enter multiple needles of the same size, but you only get one notes field for each size. I want to know where I do and don't have Addi Turbos - after the first time I tried them, it is just not the same with anything else.

You can't enter books or patterns unless they are already in the database. That is a problem, as I design or at least modify the patterns for most of my projects. I had to list some commercial patterns in my queue that are not really lined up to be used in the short term, because I couldn't figure out how to simply list them as patterns I have.

Hopefully all of this will improve with time.

Hi, I am DianeWeaves on Ravelry.

I have been mostly crocheting and weaving for the last ten years or so. But Ravelry has introduced me to Woolly Thoughts, which is developing into a dangerous addiction. Am half way through a square root sweater.

And of course the sheep are not to be missed.

Little late to answer gautherbelle's request for a weaving class, but just in case a) she still is looking and b) she is older than 50

The Long Beach Senior Center has free weaving classes for 50+ folks on Wednesday afternoons. We are not a formal class, just a bunch who get together and help each other. All levels of experience. We have looms, we have yarn, we have tools. Always glad to meet new people. We love beginners.

We also occasionally sneak in a young thing.

My guess is that by now, you've resolved the books issue, but if not. You must first export the book list from library thing into a comma-separated file, save it on your hard drive and then upload it into Ravelry.

It sounds more difficult than it is, actually. If you would like additional help, feel free to leave me a comment on My Profile page.

mkstansbery - on Library Thing or
ohwellfine - on Ravelry.com or leave a comment on my blog:

Well, hokey smokes, it worked this time. I'm a technodummy, but I think Ravelry's instructions are wrong. It says to use the tab-delimited data, and that's what I used the first two or seven times I tried it, but that did not work. Then I read post number above, and it said to use the comma-separated data, and it worked. So go figure.

Thanks, mkstansbery!

I knit SOOO much more in winter, Snodgrass. This past summer I don't think I picked up any knitting at all. Though I have now become addicted to making socks, so between socks and Ravelry I will probably knit year round now.

It's funny but just yesterday I felt a need to switch from my summer to my autumn knitting. Even though I have two huge stole projects each about 2/3 done, I just had to spin 2 oz of roving and pull out the yarn I last spun to start a set of winter hats. It's time for me to put away the lace and start on the hats, socks, scarves, and mittens of winter knitting.
I don't know why I'm so seasonal, but it just appeals to me as "right."
I love spinning even more than knitting and I spin mostly for these kinds of projects, so I'm unreasonably excited.

There is an LT group on Ravelry as well. I think it also gets quiet here in the Summer time (at least for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere.) But I am already thinking about things I want to knit this fall. I am Marensr on Ravelry but I had neglected it lately.

Hi, I'm new to the LT. I'm Flex-N-Knit on Ravelry. Love that sight, need to get more photos up and projects done!

I've tried to follow the instructions from Ravelry to upload from LT but I can't find the export page here at LT that they refer to. Has it been moved?
