I read this novel almost every year and have read it 20+ times now.
Its the book I read because of the chrystaline language and the atmosphere. I am standing in those rooms, in the corner, eavesdropping. It's a book I read after a dirth of good writing I think, when I am looking for a particular tone or atmosphere.
I also like the narrator Nick's voice, it doesn't squark or shout, but gives his memorial to Gatsby in a quiet, observant way.
The lesser characters are also well drawn and help in filling out the whole: Meyer Wolfsheim, Mr Katz and Klipspringer for example.
I think Fitzgerald totally captures the Jazz age era of a certain class of people. I'm not sure though that he makes me want to live in that world.
