Michael Jordan The Life, by Roland Lazenby:
Michael’s Journey
Roland Lazenby’s work provides an fair account of Jordan’s career since college to the ownership of Charlotte Hornets. The space in between matter the most and Lazenby describes the Chicago Bulls years with insights about how Jordan related to his peers and to the ownership. The portrait that emerges is of a basketball player extremely hard with his companions and conscious of his public persona. One gets the notion that Jordan developed a harsh personality in order to protect himself of excessive exposition and to achieve his goals. Driven by challenges, Jordan demands a lot from people whom he plays and works with. The story is interesting and Lazenby’s style is entertaining. Good book.

This book is valuable. It unites in a single volume Lewis’ works that are published in different collections of short pieces and essays. Some works were never published at all. Some short stories are published here even if the were incomplete. As a result, the reader gets a fair account of Lewis’ wisdom and interests. Most of the pieces deals with one or another question about christian theology and christian life, specially in the Anglican Church. Most remarkable was that the books allows the reader/listener to be in close contact with Lewis ability to expose christian theology in a plain and clear language. Lewis knows how to treat complex ideas in an understandable way. Great book!

Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die, by John Piper:
The Ground of Christian Faith
This book deals with an important fact of christian faith- the death of Jesus Christ - in order to expose its meaning and consequences to the believers. Piper examines the Scripture’s testimony about it and points its implications in christian life. The chapters are short and the book can easy be read as a devotional (one chapter a day). In this work one can see how profitable is the rule of the analogy of the Scripture (the Scripture explains the Scripture). John Piper succeeds in giving a systematic account of the matter.

>7 MarcusBastos: interesting. I've somehow ended up managing our church's Facebook page, and in doing so (and trying to put up snippets of what I hope is vaguely useful content) it's made me realise just how much I thought I fully understood about Christianity but actually don't.
I'm going to do a weekly series later in the year on recommended Christian books - if there are any you'd suggest adding to the list please let me know. I'm looking to include something for both believers and non-believers in the selection.

Exposing the works of Albert Camus, Søren Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Sartre, this course deals with the main ideas of existentialism. Robert C. Solomon’s exposition is clear. The course’s text points the main concepts developed by the thinkers and relates one with the other. The idea of freedom and responsibility and the concept of the individual are particularly examined. This is a good introduction to the authors that shape the movement we called existentialism.

Obra coletiva que expõe com clareza as diferentes perspectivas pós-modernas da crítica literária e sua aplicação à exegese dos textos bíblicos. Os capítulos tratam da crítica da resposta do leitor, crítica estruturalista e narratológica, crítica pós-estruturalista, crítica retórica, crítica psicanalítica, crítica feminista e mulherista e crítica ideológica. Ao final de cada capítulo há uma relação de leituras recomendadas, com breve descrição da cada obra, permitindo que o leitor possa se aprofundar em qualquer das perspectivas apresentadas. Os “métodos” pós-modernos de interpretação da Bíblia se apresentam como “críticos”, porque se pretendem auto reflexivos, isto é, refletem sobre seus próprios pressupostos e admitem sua superação/substituição. Trata-se de obra que postula serem a leitura e as estratégias interpretativas atividades social, política e institucionalmente engajadas. Empresas que tiram energia e força das posições de sujeito ocupadas por leitores e intérpretes (p. 268). Isso fica evidente especialmente nos capítulos dedicados à crítica feminista e mulherista (capítulo seis) e à crítica ideológica (capítulo sete). Os autores sustentam que, como não há nenhuma leitura não-ideológica da Bíblia, não há leitura da Bíblia que não seja política ou não tenha consequências políticas (p. 302). Ao final, o leitor tem acesso à bibliografia utilizada, informação valiosa para aqueles que pretendem estudar as questões discutidas. Livro extremamente útil para quem quer que se interesse por hermenêutica e pelo texto bíblico.

Jessé Souza procura demonstrar a ação concertada da elite norteamericana nos fatos políticos que experimentamos desde o governo Lula. Mesmo que não convença o leitor, faz pensar. Uma leitura interessante. O livro contém um bônus: um ensaio feito pelo autor sobre duas obras de Gilberto Freire: "Casa Grande e Senzala" e "Sobrados e Mucambos".

Nossos erros, nossas ilusões, nossas omissões são expostos a partir da perspectiva de uma jornalista que não apenas se debruçou sobre as contradições de nosso país, mas também vivenciou (e vivencia) a realidade de um dos segmentos mais vulneráveis de nossa sociedade. A realidade dos “povos das florestas” perpassa todo o texto. A sensibilidade da Autora produziu uma reflexão que merece ser conhecida e apreciada.

The author succeeds in it, beginning with the origins of christian faith (greek and judaic thought) and examining the constitution and development of the Christian Church in the West and in the East. Diarmaid MacCulloch argues that the longevity and success of the Christian Faith is derived in great measure to its capacity to accommodate change. Dogmatism and fanaticism, history shows, didn’t always prevails. The book emphasizes the main facts in christian’s history and explains the history’s backgrounds of their development. This
is an enlightening work, specially for the students of Christian Church and beliefs.

Como Ler um Texto de Filosofia, by Antônio Joaquim Severino:
Prazer na Leitura
Aplicar os insights do Autor na leitura de textos filosóficos pode ter algum proveito, mas certamente vai retirar qualquer prazer na atividade. O modo que descreve como sendo o apropriado para uma leitura fecunda da filosofia tem alguma serventia para a atividade acadêmica e pode municiar o leitor/estudioso de algumas ferramentas para extrair o máximo de seus esforços. Não recomendo, contudo, a adoção irrestrita das sugestões que faz. Corre-se o risco de tornar a leitura uma atividade enfadonha e torturante. Isso não obstante, trata-se de uma leitura útil a todos os que se interessam por filosofia e, de um modo mais geral, pela leitura de textos acadêmicos.

The lectures are selected from different courses, gave by different professors, so it lacks a systematic approach. Nevertheless, it is a good listening.

Este fenômeno, novo enquanto programa sistemático de ação, todavia antigo enquanto modo característico de atuação dos profissionais do direito, é descrito no livro. A descrição é objetiva, diria até sumária, mas suficientemente clara para que o leitor tenha um vislumbre desta importante ferramenta para a prática da violência institucional. Leitura útil para identificar a forma “normal” de atuação do Judiciário brasileiro: completo desprezo pelo marco constitucional e decidido abandono da impessoalidade na aplicação das normas.
