Hi everyone, this is my first message to the group. I am wondering if anyone out there has been following the releases by Schocken under the Jewish Encounters collection. I myself bought Betraying Spinoza (Rebecca Goldstein) and loved every bit of it, and now I bought (but still haven't read) Jews and Power (Ruth R. Wisse) and The Life of David (Robert Pinsky). Any thoughts anyone?

I thought Barney Ross and Betraying Spinozawere both great and I don't usually read books about boxers or heretics :) I did not enjoy The Life of David I though Robert Pinsky strayed to far from tradition. Maimonides provided a different perspective on teh Rambam than I was used to (the author is a medical doctor). I plan to read David Mamet's book next. Eventually, I will read them all, bli neder.

Did you read the David book yet? What did you think?

Yaakov, I have not started the David book yet - it is next on my list. Jews and Power was great, and I also read Resurrecting Hebrew - I loved it! Have you read any new ones recently?

I finished David Mamet's book The Wicked Son
I enjoyed it, but not as much as I enjoyed the biographies. I thought Barney Ross was the best read so far, which is odd since I don't especially enjoy or know much about boxing.

I plan to read the Disraeli book next. The Hebrew book sounded good too. I thought by now I'd be up to date (reading them as soon as they come out), but my to be read pile is growing faster than the finished pile.....
