Become a member to post.

I have just posted to a group and been told off by it's admin. they say only members can post. are they not able to stop non members posting?

There is a setting which allows the admin to limit posting to members, but if that has not been done, anyone can post.

If a group is "join to post", that should show on the group page.

If it's join to post, then you can't post if you aren't a member. If that hasn't been set, and you can post, the admin should not be telling you off.

I, personally, won't join a group unless I have already posted several times, and feel comfortable with the responses I got. This administrator doesn't sound very welcoming.

"Join to post" is unwelcoming to begin with, but being told off by the admin when you ask to join - wow!

I should say, there are some groups with good reason to be join-to-post - groups for marginalized groups who may want to keep out people who just want to post hateful things (allowed under the LT TOS so long as they don't address particular members as individuals) - but most join-to-post groups just seem to want to keep their clubs exclusive. And for the former case, I'd hope that if the admin suspected someone of ill intent, they'd just quietly decline the request to join, rather than lambasting the requester.

From reading the first post here, it seems the group is set up as public, so the OP was able to post, but then got lambasted for having the temerity to do so. It seems to me if they want to restrict posting to members, they should make the group join-to-post.
