Welcome to KiddyCATplanning thread. If you are interested in hosting KiddyCAT in 2023, please post in this planning thread. Months and topics are up for grabs now, I will update below. The host generally posts the new topic around the 15th of the previous month.
For those new to the idea, the host selects the topic for their month, suggestions below. Then the host creates the thread of the month where participants can comment or post their own reading selections, questions, or ideas. The host also posts suggestions or titles to help participants choose their reading selections.
Children's and young adult literature, also known as juvenile literature, includes written works (including poetry, short stories, novels, picture books, and chapter books) created to be read either to or by children and teenagers. Young adult fiction (YA) is a category of fiction written for readers from 12 to 18 years of age.
Let's use this space to keep track of topics and hosts for each month.

I am so looking forward to this CAT!
I would love to do April - fantasy middle grade or YA.

I'll host a month.
How about Picture Books & Graphic Novels? I can take January, unless someone else wants it.
I see a 2nd one I want to do if we don't have enough hosts (unless someone else chooses it first!).

>9 Tess_W: Thanks, done!

>9 Tess_W: You had me at YA historical fiction!
12JayneCM
Is it ridiculous to already know what I am going to read for January?! A graphic novel I have had in the wings for ages.
13LadyoftheLodge
>12 JayneCM: Not at all!
14LibraryCin
>12 JayneCM: LOL! I think there are a lot of planners here, so you're probably not the only one to already have figured out something they'll be reading in January (and maybe the rest of the year, too, for those CATs and KITs that already have all their months filled in with themes!)
15LadyoftheLodge
I put myself in for December, so we have the alpha and omega. Now we need to fill in the middle months.
17LadyoftheLodge
>16 NinieB: Okay, thanks!
18DeltaQueen50
I would like to take November with "Fairy tales, Myths and Legends", please.
19LadyoftheLodge
>18 DeltaQueen50: Thanks, done!
20LibraryCin
>18 DeltaQueen50: Yay! That was the other I was thinking of! Glad someone is doing it!
21DeltaQueen50
>20 LibraryCin: I held off a little as I wasn't sure if the Fairy Tale Theme would be too similar to the Fantasy theme, but I think there are enough differences that there's room for both.
22lowelibrary
I will host in June. - I am thinking of books with animals as the main character.
23JayneCM
>21 DeltaQueen50: I am thinking there are a lot of retellings (which are one of my favourite themes!) that could be read for this one, as well as the original versions.
I would call it different to fantasy.

Four months are left: May, July, September, October

>26 LadyoftheLodge: I'll do Children's classics.
Did I see that this is one of the themes in the ClassicsCAT? (I'm not doing it, but I took a peek last night.) I feel like it might be nice if we did that in both CATs the same month to make it easier for people? I need to check what month it is and does everyone think that's a good idea?
ETA: the ClassicsCAT one is in May. That month is still open here. Is everyone ok with that?
Also note that I don't mean to limit this to "children". Any YA classics would be welcome, too!

Thanks >23 JayneCM:, >25 LadyoftheLodge:, >27 LibraryCin:, for all the encouragement, I also love re-tellings of fairy tales so I am looking forward to hosting this one!
33LadyoftheLodge
>32 clue: Thanks, I added you with topic TBD.
34LadyoftheLodge
September and October are open.
37Tess_W
ONLY IF nobody else volunteers, I could do a second month with the theme "banned children's books"
38LadyoftheLodge
>37 Tess_W: Thanks, let’s wait a bit and see if anyone else volunteers. I can also pick up September if no one else can do it.

KiddyCAT wiki is here, not quite complete for each month.

I'll offer to do September if we can do a theme like history/biography. There are non-fiction books from the picture book level through YA level--and some are quite good!
41LadyoftheLodge
>40 thornton37814: Thanks, you are a mind reader! I was hoping for a nonfiction month since the other months are fiction topics.
42LadyoftheLodge
We are complete! Thank you to all our volunteer hosts! Blessings and peace.

>41 LadyoftheLodge: Sorry that I was so late getting around to this one. I might have spoken up sooner if I'd made it here a bit quicker. It's just been busy lately. Some of it will improve by mid-year next year. I've been trying to spend time offline so I'm not on a computer all the time, and I got terribly behind on threads and didn't do my usual visiting the CAT/KIT planning threads.
44LadyoftheLodge
>43 thornton37814: Glad to hear you are doing okay and catching up with things again. Thank you for volunteering.
45LibraryCin
>41 LadyoftheLodge: I think you can probably find nonfiction books in some of the other categories, too: picture books/graphic novels, animals, classics... and probably some of the others.
46LadyoftheLodge
>45 LibraryCin: I am sure you are right, and some of those others are on my shelves even as we speak!
48LadyoftheLodge
>47 clue: Thank you!

Thinking here about the discussion going on in the general thread for 2023 Category Challenge--if any host needs help with posting the thread, please let me know. Some monthly hosts like to include many suggestions of titles, plus graphics or book covers. I appreciate it very much when hosts do that, especially if the topics might not be familiar to all of us. However, the main idea is to get the thread posted and participants can add suggested titles or mention their own reading plans.

Hello all--My apologies as I need to set up the August thread, but I'm traveling on business and I just won't be able to get it done until Wednesday. As a reminder, the theme is Kids' Series; something for you to start thinking about while I'm out of town.
