Deleting cover i uploaded by mistake

I'm not sure how to delete a cover I uploaded by mistake

photo of said cover
https://imgur.com/a/ief72d8

I flagged it as spam yesterday and now suddenly 4 people have voted "no" that this was not spam?

How can I delete it myself or get someone else to delete it?

Thanks

You cannot. Once you uploaded it, it becomes a community cover.

If someone is using it, it cannot be deleted.
If noone is using it, it will automatically disappear in a bit so just give it some time.

Marking it as spam is incorrect - which is why people voted against it.

>2 AnnieMod: Well that seems like a bad system..
also why would people vote against it? its not spam but obviously its not a good upload so why vote no?

ok so i should just switch to a different cover then and wait

Because it is not spam.

Plus - spam covers are not deleted, just suppressed.

If you still have a book pointing to this cover, it will not get deleted because there is a book using the cover. Just point to a different cover and this one will disappear (sometimes within seconds, sometimes it may take a bit longer).

I was one of those who voted against labeling it as spam because it's not spam. Spam is an attempt to deceive, or to sell things outside of the rules of the system. The photo certainly doesn't meet those criteria. And there are sanctions for those who falsely flag things as spam, so it's important not to make that mistake.

I agree that it can be problematic to post an image that isn't the one you want; I wish there were a way to withdraw one if you do it right after uploading it. But that's a Recommended Site Improvement, not a bug. Until and unless that happens, I make it a rule to only upload my own cover if the correct cover is not available among member-uploaded covers, and to double-check before doing so. Of course, some people want photos of their own copy; I just want to be able to identify the book at a glance.

More serious is the fact that it's too !!!ing easy to falsely flag a cover as Spam or Not a Cover or Inapplicable to this work. It takes only one click, the three items are very close together, and there is no way to withdraw it. I've several times had to vote "no" on my own flags, and I've seen quite a few others do it, too. There really needs to be a "cancel" button in the flag window. But that, too, is a Site Improvement, not a bug.

Do you want the system to treat you as a spammer?

Closing (not a bug).

This can already be done. Simply upload a new cover to replace the erroneous one, then click "Recalculate cover" (at the bottom of the righthand sidebar of the work/book page) to make the bad cover go away.

You answered your own question

Interesting. Thank you.

Wish that were documented somewhere on the page, though, instead of having to be figured out by indirect hints in the help. :-) The perpetual problem, I know. At least, it's perpetual for me....

Yes, but they'd have to move fast. The only time I've done this is when I uploaded the wrong cover and realized it instantly. If they gave us fifteen seconds to undo, it would be sufficient for me.

Also, I only upload my own cover when there is no other cover of that edition. (Of course, with my ultra-obscure library, that's still many hundreds of covers!)

That's just me, of course. It's a workaround I'm not likely to ever use, because I'm now so careful not to repeat the mistake. :-) But this whole thread arises because it did happen to someone else.

On the Change cover page, above the Upload button, after the cover has been uploaded, a message appears:

This book uses a custom cover (remove it).

With (remove it) being a link. I haven't got an example to test this out, but I think I've used that without problem in the past to remove a mistaken upload. Of course if another user has chosen it as AnnieMod describes it won't totally remove it from the site. Might be that is what OP was looking for?

>13 Nevov: I don't think I've ever used that (or noticed it) - as soon as I upload the new cover after a bad upload, it just disappears for me (or a recalculate cover makes it disappear if it does not happen automatically).

>13 Nevov: I looked at the screen both for a cover I had added and a member cover I had used. The link is there for both and does the same as pointing manually to a different cover - removes the connection between that book and the cover it is carrying. In the process, the cover I had just added got removed (I am unwilling to try with another cover that I am the only user of and which I had not uploaded - just in case it gets swiped out). But then just uploading a new cover also deletes the one I just uploaded.

So I am not sure it is actually deleting - it just removes it from the book and let's LT decide what to do with the actual cover.

>15 AnnieMod: That seems logical, thanks for testing, and good decision not to risk testing it on a cover that you might be the only one keeping "alive".

>16 Nevov: I can always download it and then try to see what happens I guess - if it disappears I can then re-upload it. I hate doing things like that though - people may have links to that cover and if I plan to keep it anyway, I'd rather not go and replace it for the sake of replacement.

I can test with my second account though - if I ever remember what the password was anyway ;) Will post back when I have some time for some creative covers uploads and what's not.
