Silvia Moreno-Garcia's new novel SILVER NITRATE might be of interest to members of TWT. I'm really enjoying the little things that the author does to make it so compelling, such as referencing the more obscure corners of horror film history, especially as seen through the lens of the Mexican film industry. Then there's the idea of silver nitrate film stock acting as a conduit for an Aleister Crowley-inspired magic spell. Not to mention partially basing (I'm reasonably sure) a character on Hanns Heinz Ewers. THE DEEP ONES covered his "The Spider" at one point. Moreno-Garcia has some interesting Lovecraftian credentials in her background. She also opens the book with a quotation from "Casting the Runes" by M.R. James.

So here's a question for the experts. In the novel, "Wilhelm Ewers", the character I think might have been inspired by H.H. Ewers, is beaten to death in a mugging gone wrong. That's not a spoiler, btw. The real Ewers died in bed from tuberculosis, but I could swear that THE DEEP ONES have covered a story at some point which was written by an author who was beaten to death. If I'm remembering correctly - who was it?

A few of the Deep Ones authors suffered violent deaths. I don't know all their biographies, but of those that I do, Bruno Schulz's death would be the best fit, as it were, in terms of senseless violence.

He was shot dead by a Gestapo officer whilst walking back to the Drohobycz Ghetto with a loaf of bread.

Schulz! Yes - it was his murder that was jogging my memory. Thanks for the answer.
