The only real growing space in my garden is between two birch trees, so is in dappled shade through the growing season. The light is good, and much of it does get some direct sunlight in the early afternoon. It is sheltered too, with fencing on two sides and the greenhouse on a third. The last side is open to a patio area and the house to the west.

I am putting in three raised beds made of railway sleepers (no, no - no creosote!) which will be 5' x 8'. I have been given a good price for some spent mushroom compost, so that's what they will be filled with. They will have trellis panels at the patio end, which will probably have some kind of fruit trees trained up them.

The question now, or rather, next spring, is what to grow in the beds.

Salad crops will certainly be there, as they will be used and should do quite happily in the shade. Various lettuces/cut leaf salads, radishes. (The greenhouse, which is to the south and gets good light, will have tomatoes and tomatillos again, peppers, perhaps aubergines and maybe a cucumber.)

I shall probably put in a row of autumn raspberries at the north end of the beds, directly under one of the birches; I believe they will cope okay with the shade.

But what else shall I try?

I use american upland cress, Italian parsley, lettuces, wild rocket and silverbeets ("perpetual spinach" variety which is tastier). Chicories and corn salad too.
