Sad news: Waterfield's (est. 1973) is closing in early September.

Indeed it is, and this is a cause for genuine sorrow and remorse. It was one of those idiosyncratic bookstores, of good value for those with esoteric interests (genuinely - I was amazed to find that, although expensive, most of the books are cheaper than new or used copies of the same rare volumes on the internet), that help to add character to a city.

However, the time for mourning will come later. Now is the time for taking advantage of the opportunity. There is a 50% sale on everything. I took most of the political philosophy (including a much better collection on Edmund Burke than any other bookshop I've ever seen), but only about half of the other shelves are empty. The history collection, in particular, remains healthy.

Bloody hell – I'd better get there before you go back for Round 2!
