An interesting enough start to the Earth Warrior series. It set up the premise well but I found the characterization for Baz and Kellan to be a bit light. I'm hoping that certain unresolved aspects will be clarified in future books. And I do hope there are more books forthcoming...especially one revolving around Sekhmet and Isis! ( )

Fast-paced, action packed, and enjoyable, "Bastet" was nevertheless quite a frustrating read for me ~ not because it's bad, but because it's so nearly fantastic.

The concept ~ Egyptian mythology meets Highlander mythos ~ really appeals to me, and a light, slightly broad-brush style is a great way to tackle shape-shifting bickering immortals who have to deal with bus schedules. To complain about a lack of detailed realism would be like complaining that Warehouse 13 isn't an accurate portrayal of the FBI.

There's no such defence, though, for the uneven dialogue ~ often stilted, sometimes snappy and slick ~ or the frequent hopping between different characters' points of view. These technical flaws made me so aware of the act of reading that I wasn't able to fully immerse myself in the tale, and once that happened, it was much harder to ignore the irritating genre conventions that might otherwise have passed without drawing attention to themselves ~ the speed with which Bastet and Kellan fall in love with one another, the way Kellan's friends evaporate towards the end of the book, the almost total lack of female characters ...

For many people, those elements may be entirely outweighed by the presence of an international hot-ass man of mystery who sweeps into Kellan's life and transforms him from mousy research student to the smart, adored beloved of an immortal.

While that's not my favourite type of romance, I must admit that Kellan's 'this has to be too good to be true' reaction to Bastet's arrival in his life is fantastic, as is Bastet's brothers' reaction to Bastet suddenly deciding that Kellan is his one true love, who gets to hear all about their secrets.

There's a lot going for this book, and although it's not everything I was hoping for, I am interested in finding out how the series continues, as Bastet and his brothers make for a fascinating core of characters.
