As the Prince Waxworth succumbs to madness, can his humble servants vanquish the maleficent forces he has unleashed upon the castle? Each panel in this gothic tale is exquisitely rendered in detailed black and white ink. ( ) Although it draws heavily on a somewhat tired Gothic vein, Tim Conrad's Toadswart D'Amplestone succeeds through a combination of almost photo-realistic visuals and a convoluted story that simply gets more preposterous with each turn of the page. There are obvious nods herein to Poe's "Hop Frog" as well as Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast, and Conrad manages to successfully plumb those sources for inspiration while avoiding the outright theft of ideas. If the ludicrous end to the story is thoroughly disappointing, it is nonetheless in keeping with the campy Gothic silliness in evidence throughout. Somehow it all fits together reasonably well, and with the lush images to carry the reader along, Toadswart is entirely rewarding on its own terms. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
