This first book of the series establishes the setting for the following seven. Princess Anghara had no place in the Forbidden Tower, and no business tampering with its secrets. But she did, and now the seven demons are loose and her world is cursed, prey to the wrath of the Earth Goddess.

I first read this series years ago and couldn't remember anything about it, unlike her Time Master books - perhaps a bad sign. However, I had kept them so couldn't have thought they were terrible, so thought I would re-read.

The story is quite well written. Unfortunately, the protagonist Anghara, who eventually becomes the title character, Indigo, is rather grating. She starts off as a privileged princess, on the verge of marriage to a man who is, by all accounts, loving and supportive of her non-ladylike ways (she loves riding and hunting, for example, which her mother deplores). The prologue makes it clear that a terrible catastrophe occurred an unknown time before and that the tower near to the King's castle is taboo: no one must never even go near it. But in a fit of pique because she has been made to stay behind on the first day of the hunting season for a wedding dress fitting, she rides out after the fitting and ends up near the tower - and then decides that it is unfair that she is denied the knowledge of its secret which has bothered her for years - her royal family are the custodians of the tower and the duty passes from father to son so will pass to her younger brother.

This is completely ignoring the fact that no one, including her father, is allowed anywhere near it, so she is not uniquely deprived - but I suppose it is his knowledge of what is inside that she is greedy to acquire. Anyway, the inevitable happens and events are triggered off which result in Indigo having to wander the world on a difficult and challenging quest, weighed down with the guilt of what her thoughtless action has caused.

I found her character similar in some ways to Shar, the protagonist of the author's young adult trilogy, 'Daughter of Storms' and similarly annoying. Anghara/Indigo, bearing in mind she is older than Shar, also has temper tantrums in which her own anger is the self justification for doing things which she knows are wrong. The only thing that redeemed the story for me was the introduction of a sentient wolf character - maybe I kept this series because I liked the wolf the first time around. So this balances out at 3-stars. ( )

Nemesis is a book I actually bought by accident, thinking it was a part of a shared universe I had read when young. What a lucky accident this was. The prologue grabbed me from the beginning and then the events of the main story wrung me out. The first part of the story may be a little slow for some but it is well worth the wait. Anghara is an impetuous princess soon to be married, much to her parent's relief. Unfortunately, her willfulness will have dire consequences for her family and the world. Redeeming her past will be a long, hard road that takes her beyond death. Great writing, memorable characters, and deep emotions have be looking for more. ( )

This is kind of my jump into fantasy books. I found it at my favorite used book store and picked up the first 4 in the series along with some other fantasy novels by other authors. I really liked it at first and had a hard time putting it down but around the middle it started to slow down a bit for me. Might take a small break and read something in-between this and the second book. But I'm curious to see where it's going. ( )

I liked this a bit when I read it, but I now find that I can't remember a thing about it. That doesn't make it a bad book, just not exceptional or memorable. ( )

This is the first book in the Indigo series by Louise Cooper. This is another one of those series that I started to read many years ago only to not finish the entire series due to lack of funds, time, or something. Now I've got the entire series and am starting over again. Not an exactly original idea, young princess who is headstrong and naive brings death and destruction down upon her family, kingdom and in fact the world due to her arrogance. Now she must right the wrong she has done. Great execution in this first book. Quick read we get right into action and meat of the storyline. Story bogs down a bit in the middle, but nothing we can't push through. Can't wait to read the rest of the series. ( )
