I think the summary of Holding On To Heaven is a little misleading. Yes, two brothers are in love with the same woman but the love triangle isn't the main focus of the plot. Lauren moves to Minnesota to live with her aunt and uncle as stirrings of the Civil War rumble through the South. Lauren is trying to get acclimated to living on a ranch. And then she meets Creed and the lasting impression she is left with is not flattering. Whenever they are in each other's presence, they argue and goad each other. We are led to believe that they act this way because they both are attracted to each other but do not want to admit it. The transition from enemies to lovers was fast and wasn't too believable to me because it was so fast. I can understand going from anger to sex; but not to love. There was no romance between them, just passion and heat so I couldn't understand why Lauren or Creed felt that the other was in their hearts.

HOTH is divided into different parts to introduce the other plot -- Sage and Wanapaya. Again, another fast moving love story but I found this one more believable because Sage saved Wanapaya's life and helped heal him. She watched over him. I can see how that can turn into a romantic relationship. In Lauren's case, she marries Brand (Creed's brother) but we never see any interaction between the two as a married couple. Brand supposedly is in love with Lauren but we never really see the development of his feelings. I feel like we missed out on a lot and were expected to just believe it without really seeing it.

Even though HOTH is billed as a historical romance, I felt that the romance aspect of the story was lacking. I didn't feel any romance from any of these characters, especially Lauren and Creed. Due to the story taking place during the Civil War and a Sioux uprising, there was a lot of dead, blood and gore and that is so the opposite of romance.

Holding Onto Heaven sort of just ends, with no satisfying resolution to Lauren's storyline and an odd epilogue with a mystery man. So I'm thinking (and hoping) that there will be another book to continue on with the story. I felt like I was left hanging especially since as a lover of romance, every romance has to have a HEA. And I felt that was no true HEA at the end.

Despite the issues I had, I enjoyed reading Holding On To Heaven. I think this book would have been better as a full length novel due to the complexity of the plot. I wish more attention had been spent on developing the romances/relationships between the characters instead of the ugliness of the war and uprising. ( )

Synopsis from amazon.co.uk

When the blazing fires of revolt ravage the countryside, Lauren and Sage McCain are trapped amid the flames of destiny. The Civil War has crumbled a Nation, and the Dakota Sioux uprising has turned southern Minnesota into a violent battlefield.

Holding on to Heaven is a story of love between two men and a woman, love between siblings, and love that crosses all boundaries and forges all cultures.

My review

When I picked this book and it was offered as erotic fiction I wasn't too sure what to expect, certainly a lot of sex and not too much else if I am honest. I could not have been more wrong! Yes there are scenes of passion (which some might find graphic) but there is so much more to this story.

The characters are introduced so well you immediately bond with them (you might not like every one of them) but you can identify with them if nothing else. The main character is Lauren and we follow her life from birth to present day and everything it brings with it.

From love and first attraction, to war, murder and depravity. Family reunions, devotion and the heartache and love that goes with it. I read this in one sitting, I did not want to put it down as I was dying to find out what happened to just about every character.

This is my first time reading this author and I will certainly be going back for more. I was entertained, kept on the edge of my seat and really enjoyed just about every aspect of this book. The only draw back for me was when it ended, I wanted it to keep going and I think that is just about the biggest compliment you can get for a story. 5/5 for me. ( )

FOUR STARS - EXCELLENT READ
Available on Amazon KINDLE

Holding on to Heaven is the latest erotic romance novel by Keta Diablo. Set amidst the turbulent times of the Civil War and the plains of Minnesota where there is a deadly Native American uprising, it’s a story of passion, love, loss and hope.

The main story focuses around Lauren and her sister Sage McCain. They are as different as night and day even though they’re almost identical on the outside. Lauren was raised in the very Southern way of live in North Carolina while Sage – who was taken by the midwife after she was thought to have died at birth -- was raised by a healer/midwife whom she believes to be her grandmother.

Lauren goes to visit her beloved aunt and Uncle on their ranch in Minnesota when the danger of war looms over North Carolina believing the dreaded conflict wouldn’t touch her there. Little did she know that during such a turbulent time she’d come face to face with the man who steals her heart and he’s going to fight for the North! Creed Gatlin sets her heart fluttering even while he enrages her with his high-handed and overbearing ways. The passion that grows between them is volatile and soon neither of them can deny it. However, it’s far from happily ever after for the two when Creed’s younger brother Finn enlists to fight for the North, and Creed joins him in an attempt to keep his brother safe. Lauren can’t believe that just when they’ve found each other he’s leaving to fight against the South, the only way of life Lauren has ever known.

Meanwhile Sage McCain comes upon a wounded, near death Winnebago warrior that she and her grandmother nurse back to health. The feelings she has for the Native American warrior are more than just friendly and the two fall in love. The fates have much in store for them, including Sage learning who she really is.

Can Sage and Wanapaya find happiness together? Will Lauren and Creed be able to be together or will the ravages of the war and a Sioux uprising take their lives before they get the chance to find out?

This novel is one that tells the gripping struggles and the difficulties of this very dangerous and pivotal time in American history. It shows the challenges and hardships many had to endure where danger and death were an everyday occurrence.

Keta Diablo really knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will befall the main characters. Lovers of historical fiction will love this one! I’m a big fan of the Civil War era and it’s nice to see this as the backdrop for this novel. I don’t think it’s written about as much as it should be in the historical romance world. Holding on to Heaven has it all -- adventure, desire, and the indelible spirit of human hope and perseverance. I enjoyed it and hope this might be the start of a series where we can see some of these characters yet again!
