In my opinion, this is an excellent book that exposes certain gender stereotypes and shows how these stereotypes should be broken. I enjoy this book for several reasons. The language is descriptive and clear to understand. The writing is engaging and organized nicely. The storyline is easy for young readers to comprehend. There is even a glossary list of basketball terms located in the back of the book. The character of Lulu is very believable and well developed. She prefers playing basketball to playing with dolls, even though this breaks typical gender role expectations. Many female readers who enjoy playing sports over participating in stereotypical girl activities can relate to Lulu. Unfortunately, the boy characters in the story will not let Lulu join the basketball team because she is a girl. This is also a relatable rejection experience to girls who wanted to play a male sport but were not permitted because of their gender. Lulu decides to take matters into her own hands and hosts a “Basket Ball.” Girls around the world who love basketball come together to play the sport with Lulu and they form their own league. I love Lulu’s determination and passion for basketball, which allows her to create this team. The illustrations enhance the story and the style fits the written text. Pinks and purples are used because the main character is a female, yet this girl breaks gender stereotypes in order to play the game she loves. This book pushes readers to think about equal treatment of boys and girls. Through reading this book, readers may realize that girls can play sports just as easily as boys can. The big idea of the story is anyone should be allowed to participate in anything they want, regardless of gender. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
After the boys won't let her join in their basketball game, Lulu decides to host a Basket Ball, where girls from all over come to participate and, with Lulu as captain, end up forming a special team. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
