An author who "excels at combining the tension of the chase with the elements of science fiction,"* John Barnes delivered a fascinating and frightening scenario about the collapse of America's political and social infrastructure following the destruction of modern technology. Now, the author of Directive 51 and Daybreak Zero continues his story of the wild postapocalyptic frontier--and humanity's last desperate attempt to re-civilize their world.... For more than a year, Heather O'Grainne and her small band of heroes, operating out of Pueblo, Colorado, have struggled to pull the United States back together after it shattered under the impact of the event known as Daybreak. Now they are poised to bring the three or four biggest remaining pieces together, with a real President and Congress, under the full Constitution again. Heather is very close to fulfilling her oath, creating a safe haven for civilization to be reborn. But other forces are rising too. Some people like the new life better.... In a devastated, splintered, postapocalyptic United States, with technology thrown back to biplanes, black powder, and steam trains, a tiny band of visionaries struggles to re-create Constitutional government and civilization itself, as a new Dark Age takes shape around them. *Rocky Mountain News… (meer)

This is the 3rd novel in Barnes' Daybreak series. I hadn't remembered that I had read and reviewed this book a year ago. That is telling, especially since I now see that my new review repeats a lot of what I wrote at that time.

The first 50 to 70 pages basically summarize the two previous novels, but not enough so that a new reader would be able to pick up on the story line. Barnes has crafted a complex novel that alternates between half a dozen major locales and intertwined plot lines. It sometimes is difficult to make the switch between locales and characters that change every few pages. Gives an impression that the book is too chopped up into too many subsections. I also found too much repetition. The ending is compelling (no spoilers here). It comes on quickly and sets the stage for another book in the series. Overall, I enjoyed the book and will gladly read the next one. ( )

The first half of this 3rd volume in the Daybreak series becomes rather tedious with its slow pace and lack of plot development. The second half of the book has some interesting, but not unexpected plot turns. The end is a little thin, as is the author ran out of space allotment and had to rush to lay the groundwork for another book in this series. Character development could be better. It is rather thin and not consistent. I'll read the next book, whenever it comes, and can only hope that the series improves. ( )

For the second time since "back before," Christmas crept under the world's grimy, icy blanket of soot, found the world shivering, hungry, and afraid, and brought the world nothing.
