"When an inexplicable wave of energy slammed into North America, millions died. In the rest of the world, wars erupted, borders vanished, and the powerful lost their grip on power. Against this backdrop, with a conflicted U.S. president struggling to make momentous decisions in Seattle and a madman fomenting rebellion in Texas, three women are fighting their own battles--for survival, justice, and revenge. Special agent Caitlin Monroe moves stealthily through a South American jungle. Her target: a former French official now held prisoner by a ruthless despot. To free the prisoner, Caitlin will kill anyone who gets in her way. And then she will get the truth about how a master terrorist escaped a secret detention center in French Guadeloupe to strike a fatal blow in New York City. Sofia Peiraro is a teenage girl who witnessed firsthand the murder and mayhem of Texas under the rule of General Mad Jack Blackstone. Sofia might have tried to build a life with her father in the struggling remnants of Kansas City--if a vicious murder hadn't set her on another course altogether: back to Texas, even to Blackstone himself. Julianne Balwyn is a British-born aristocrat turned smuggler. Shopping in the most fashionable neighborhood of Darwin, Australia--now a fantastic neo-urban frontier--Jules has a pistol holstered in the small of her lovely back. She is playing the most dangerous game of all: waiting for the person who is hunting her to show his face--so she can kill him first. Three women in three corners of a world plunged into electrifying chaos. Nation-states struggling for their survival. Immigrants struggling for new lives. John Birmingham's astounding new novel--the conclusion to the series begun in Without Warning and After America--is an intense adventure that races from the halls of power to shattered streets to gleaming new cities, as humanity struggles to grasp its better angels--and purge its worst demons"--… (meer)

The 3rd and (probably) final volume in the 'Wave' trilogy, Angels of Vengeance' ties up the loose ends of the first 2 books well enough. The USA is gone, as is the 'Wave' which Disappeared most of its population (though the body is still twitching annoyingly). Caitlin Monroe, 'Echelon' agent is front and centre in this installment, as she the mastermind of the attack on New York which filled so much of the previous book in the series. Birmingham's characters are well rounded and fight internal and external battles of conscience and belief, each no doubt sure of the rightness of their cause. There is even a villain left tantalizingly off stage to the left, as yet undefeated, who might reappear in future works. ( )

Disappointing end(?) to the series. No explanation of the wave, so blah blah Mr Birmingham, ( )

This is the third and final installment in John Birmingham's trilogy that started with WITHOUT WARNING and continued with AFTER AMERICA. If you have not read those two yet, please do so, and in that order. The stories and the characters involved make a lot more sense that way. This book is a fitting conclusion to the trilogy. Birmingham's main characters are well fleshed out and the plot lines work. Echelon agent Caitlin Monroe carries much of the action, starting out in South America and ending up in Blackstone's Texas. Sofia, Miguel's daughter, goes back to Texas to exact revenge on Blackstone for the murder of her family. Julianne Balwyn and the Rhino show up in Australia, being hunted down by people intent on killing them. All the plot lines resolve most satisfactorily.

My sole complaint about the book has been echoed by a few other reviewers. Something more should have been said about the nature of the Wave and why it did what it did. Also, some more action should have taken place in Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, areas of the US not impacted by that event. Had there been some closure there, it would have lifted my rating of this book. ( )

I quite liked the book even though it didn't hook me as much as the first two in the series. The title is more or less a spoiler that pretty much telegraphs how it is going to turn out anyway. There are few in jokes with character names sprinkled through that will give lefties a grin (especially if you're an Aussie). It is cool having thee female kick arse heroines that are the nominal Angels of the story but "Commando Barbie" does come across as a more than believable clinical killing machine. More so than, say, James Bond? Who knows? May be it was just the constant reference to her as "Echelon's top agent" (or similar) rather than just Caitlin that irked me. On the whole though an entertaining and decent wrap up of the series. ( )
