Biography & Autobiography. Religion & Spirituality. Nonfiction. HTML:

A "brave memoir" by a woman who left her husband and her church to find her own spiritual path (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

Carlene Cross joined the world of evangelical Christianity as a teenager, and after attending Bible college and marrying a charismatic young man who appeared destined for greatness as a fundamentalist minister, she thought the pieces of her life had fallen into place. But her feelings of hope and promise started to crumble when she realized that her husband had fallen victim to the same demons that had plagued his youth.

When efforts to hold their family together failed, she broke awayâ??despite the condemnation of the congregation and the anger of many she had considered friends. Once outside, she realized that the secular world was not the seething cauldron of corruption and sin she had believed, and found herself questioning the underpinnings of the fundamentalist faith. In this "absorbing" account, Cross tells of waiting tables, going on welfare in order to earn a degree and support her children, and making peace with her past; and offers a plea for greater tolerance and understanding in an era when religion so often divides people instead of uniting them (Publishers Weekly).

"A painfully candid account of faith gained and faith lost, of forgiveness, and of the often rocky road of spiritual growth." â??Booklist

Fleeing Fundamentalism: A Minister's Wife Examines Faith was a class assignment which I resisted, it not being a topic of much interest but within thirty pages or so, I found the book to be a page-turner. The author is a good and descriptive writer with a sense of humor. I appreciated her thorough nature as she enhanced her biblical study with historical research. Her missionary junket behind the Iron Curtain was tense and suspenseful and the ways in which her marriage to a Northwest Baptist preacher evolved was a shocker, confirming my suspicions about fundamentalist conservatism and misogyny. Her exploratory journey into and away from the confines of this secretive, scary extremism is an enlightening and entertaining trip to another world. ( )

My only real criticism of this very readable insider view of Christian fundamentalist churches is that Cross equates her husband's abuse and sex addiction to his faith. Not surprisingly, she comes to reject Christianity in its entirety. She explains her perspective through slightly didactic but fact-based conversations with friends and family but members of fundamentalist congregations are more likely to react defensively than to hear and take in her position. I identified a lot with Carlene Cross; having wasted years of my own life in a fundamentalist Christian cult-like church, I had many similar things happen to me. Thankfully I didn't marry into it, at least, although I nearly did. I know first-hand all of the hypocrisy and abuse that can occur in such situations; reading this book was painful for me, as it brought back a lot of memories that I have been trying to forget.

I rated the book four stars because I just couldn't get into the author's style much of the time. ( )

a well-written, interesting story of a woman's journey from blind faith, to spiritual peace. ( )
