Some amazing bookshelves in this one! ( )

Based on Alex Johnson's blog about bookshelves (theblogonthebookshelf.blogspot.com), this is a collection of the myriad styles of bookshelves as traditional cases, single shelves, furniture, and everything in between. The hardcover edition is nicely bound and chock full of beautiful full-colour images of every piece, each with a website address for the particular designer. At the back of the book is a further reading section listing book titles, articles and website links to related reading.

As a design book, it's great. For a serious bibliophile constantly struggling for creative ways to defy the laws of physics, it's a fun book to flip through but rarely does it offer practical ideas (though there are a few gems) for anyone but those that have small collections or extraordinarily large houses. Someday when I have money, I'll have a big wing of my house devoted to books, and then another wing next to it devoted to artistic bookcases. ( )

A collection of images of unusual and artistically designed bookshelves, many featuring curvy shapes, odd angles, and other interesting effects. I must say, the book-lover in me can't help looking askance at a lot of these, as many or most of them seem more than a little impractical, and clearly designed by people who care way more about the visual impact of the shelves than they do about books and the storing thereof. Still, the pictures are a lot of fun to look through, and even if there aren't many of them I'd probably be happy to have in my house, there are certainly designs here that are clever, creative, and charming. You thought Bookshelves were normal, didn't you? Not anymore! This book is awesome and gave me so many new ideas and ways of looking at ways to hold/store/display books etc.
Highly recommended for people who are looking to redecorate, or just dream of redecorating. ( )

A multitude of books confuses the mind. Accordingly, since you cannot read all the books which you may possess, it is enough to possess only as many books as you can read.

In 1901, John Willis Clark wrote about the 'ever-present need for more space to hold the invading hordes of books that represent the literature of today' in his fascinating and groundbreaking study of library fixtures and fittings, The Care of Books. Over a century later we are still faced iwth the same, happy, problem.
