This is a new genre for me. It took me a little longer to read than most books, most likely because of the genre. It took me a little while to get into the book, as it does any new genre. The book is set in the future with the fall of government. War continues to wage on. People are struggling to maintain lives. Beliefs are questioned. The story between Kate and Hunter is like a futuristic Romeo and Juliet story. Their families are enemies. They shouldn't even be friends, let alone fall in love with one another. The background of this story is so unique. The world in upheaval in the future. Tribes existing within only their own tribes. The societies have almost gone back to Indian-like times. The men are the head and are the providers. The women are just to obey. I really enjoyed this book. It is well-written. I thought I would have a hard time following it, but that wasn't the case. It was captivating and intense. I would recommend this book to just about anyone. This is an intriguing debut novel. I've just started reading dystopian fiction and "In Between Seasons" had me thinking, wondering, rooting for Kate, and later Hunter. Ms. Giovanni gives nothing away with her realistic voice and the plot. As you read, you are given glimpses of what has happened to the world, and just who really is the enemy, and who is in charge. There was a twist at the end that I didn't see coming, and it made me want a sequel right now. The tension between the characters keeps you guessing and you do have to wonder about those ladies on the sofa and what they have to do with the world situation. Even better, nothing is spelled out - the story unfolds in action and dialogue. As I mentioned, this is a debut novel and while not perfect (what is?), it is a promising start for a young author that I envision growing from strength to strength and improving upon what she has done here. I enjoyed this book. I feel that Giovanni did a very good job at writing the book and she came up with some very interesting parts to the book. However, I also feel that the book could have used some more editing. My impression was that the characters from Kate's tribe could have used some more developing to add more depth to them. Additionally, I, personally, would liked to have seen a few more character flaws in the male protagonist. Also, there were a few tiny bits that felt like they could be rewritten a little better. Overall though, none of these problems are major. I simply think that with a bit more polishing, this story could have really shined. The few issues I have with the book aside, I thought the premise was interesting and I enjoyed how the plot played out. Other than the obvious romance potential between the protagonists, Kate and Hunter, I found that the book was not overly predictable, something I enjoy very much in a book. This book defiantly had some cleverly written lines. I simply would have liked more of them. Overall, I would recommend this book for a light read. It defiantly is worth it if you are looking for an escape from your normal life. Even though I would not recommend this book if you are looking for amazing literature, I am looking forward to reading Giovanni's future novels and I think that future novels written by her could be amazing literature indeed. Note: I received this book from the author free of charge in exchange for an honest review. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
In 2021 the world as we know it changed. The government collapsed, and the worst characteristics of human nature were shown as the world fell into ruins. Years after The Fall, the Tribes that were established are still at war. They still fight to keep what they pillaged, and most of all, they fight to keep their lies a secret. In a world filled with deception, nothing is as it seems.I was born into this world.Hunter Marks was molded into this world; a General- a person cold and harsh. A person meant to kill me.We were told to just believe. We were taught to never question. We're supposed to be robots and accept our roles in this altered society.Too bad Hunter and I don't follow the rules. And we're a hell of a lot stronger than they ever thought possible. They've been searching for the world's deadliest weapon. It's me.And I'm not following the leader any more.
