Fiction. Romance. HTML:

When love's for sale, who really pays?

Connor Morrison is a 3-D optics pioneer, the star of the UC Berkeley physics department, and a socially inept workaholic. And with his dear friend and business partner, Steve Campbell, handling their investors, he's content to remain in the shadows. That is, until he meets the gorgeous and starry-eyed physics student Wes Martin.

Wes is brilliant but broke. Ever since his scholarship fell victim to the financial crisis, he's had no choice but to sell his body to stay in school. Already half in love with Connor, Wes initially resists Steve's offer to be Connor's thirty-fifth birthday present. But in the end, Wes is too broke — and too smitten — to say no.

Connor has no idea Steve bought Wes's attentions, and he quickly falls under the young man's spell. Yet after one night together, Wes disappears. He can't bear to hook with a man he could so easily grow to love, but he also can't bear to tell him the truth. Besides, if he sleeps with Connor again, there'd be no way to hide the bruises one of his regular johns loves to inflict. Only one thing to do: let Connor go. Walking away is painful, but not nearly as much as building a relationship on lies.

Wes has worshipped Connor from afar as a student in his classes. Steve "rents" Wes as a birthday gift for Connor. Wes would like more but he is afraid that Connor will reject him if he finds out how Wes stays in school. I liked both Connor and Wes. There is a connection between them that cannot be destroyed no matter how much bad comes between them. I loathed Steve and hated that Wes had to sell himself to finish school. When Connor discovers what is happening with Wes he steps in and does his best to fix it. This was too short. I did not want to give these characters up I liked them so much. ( )

I felt like this could have been better put together; it felt just a bit shoddy and contrived in places, but on the whole I liked it well enough. A good rainy weekend read.

Great story. So good I wish it could have been longer, though it certainly packed a punch for its length. ( )

Not good.
It was too short and too shallow to show any kind of real development.
It feels like insta-love based on the rentboy's beauty.
The rentboy who btw is a brilliant student, who loses his scholarship in his last year - ahem - and "has" to prostitute himself to afford finishing his degree and not end "working in a convenience store" (aka a fate worse than death)- this obviously happens to people who don't have a degree from Berkely but some small unknown college... - student loans and other means seem to be non-existent in this universe. The brilliant student seems quite thick to me as he hangs on to a "regular" who hurts him and is not trustworthy. He evolves quite fast into a damsel in distress, but is quite happy to plunge into a relationship with the 15 years older physics professor who "rescues" him and have great sex a few weeks after a rape.
This is so far from plausible. And both MCs are not likable because they are stereotypes without any depth. ( )

This story is powerful and disturbing. The most disturbing thing is that it seems to totally real and possible. It hurts to think how many of are smartest young people are having to put themselves at risk to try and obtain their dreams and how condemned by others they must feel. This story has lots of dark and painful issues I'm so thankful that Conner was willing to put his feelings first not just in acceptance but to be willing be patient and not give up on love. ( )
