Before Theodor Seuss Geisel became renowned as Dr. Seuss for his children’s books, he wrote and illustrated military pamphlets, advertisements, political cartoons, and comical/farcical shorts. This book provides a cross-section of his early works – for adults! His illustration styling presented itself and carried through to his children’s books. Some of the farce seems to be in reference to events/people/times that is before my time. While others are just plain silly, such as “Tardy Laurels for Forgotten Brows” and “The Pitfalls That Beset Our Infant Prodigies”. His advertisements are quite humorous. They clearly show a different time and era (1936) to have cartoony illustrations advertising Atlas auto parts. No need for manliness! Ditto for 1937 Chilton Fountain Pens with gold inlaid initials. Apparently “Users are quick to put hands up for the Chilton” when a robber is robbing an obliging gentleman. My favorite chapter has the political cartoons. Sadly, they are relevant today with some that have “America First”. Replace Nazi’s with Russians and even more are relevant today. Sigh. My only gripe is that the chapters are not organized chronologically, which would have demonstrated his art, thoughts, and passion better. Well, if you’re a fan of Dr. Seuss’s children’s books, this is likely worth a read. ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Recognised as the most popular children's book author of the 20th century, Theodore Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) had a career in illustration that varied widely before he wrote his first juvenile book. Early Works Volume 1 is the first in a series collecting various political cartoons, advertisements and various images drawn by Geisel long before he had written any of his world-famous books.
