With his Heritage, Legacy, and Inheritance trilogies, New York Times bestselling author Ian Douglas established himself as one of the true masters of military sf--sharing center stage with such authors as Rick Shelley, John Ringo, David Sherman, and Dan Cragg in a wildly popular sub-genre of science fiction that includes such enduring classics as The Forever War by Joe Haldeman and Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers. Now, with Bloodstar, Douglas kicks off his new series, Star Corpsman, with a bang, focusing on the elite units of recon Marines and S/R Corpsmen who infiltrate alien worlds ahead of major planetary invasions to gather intelligence on both the local environment and on the psychology and biology of the enemy. In Bloodstar  Ian Douglas carries readers once more across the vast galaxy, light-years from Earth, and into the fire and terror of future war.… (meer)

A Hard Sci-Fi story about a space medic and his troop. It is a good story and focuses a lot on technical medical information. The information was presented in an interesting and easy to understand way. It was an enjoyable book that mixes military, medical, and science fiction together. ( )

Ian Douglas (one of many pseudonyms of William H Keith) brings it back home writing of the unsung medics of the Space Marines (no doubt drawing on his own experience as a Navy Corpsman in the Vietnam era). The tale 'Star Corpsman' (the first of a trilogy) is mostly well paced, with detailed alien worlds, aliens and a riddle to solve about xenopsychology. Douglas' skill is in his depiction of military life in his imagined future). Whilst the characterization is thin (main character Elliot Carlyle is pretty much a cipher, and he is easily the best drawn of the dramatis personae), and the stodgy infodumps describing the process of treating injured comrades on the battlefield tend to disrupt the narrative flow, overall the story entertains effectively enough. Perfect for a long plane or train ride. ( )

Bloodstar is the first book in the Star Corpsman series and I think it was pretty good. In some ways I think it was better than the 2nd one because by then E Car is becoming a Mary Sue. In this book while E Car is the hero the whole team participated in making the mission a success.

The author like to play doctor and it is interesting to learn about physiology but it's not for everyone. ( )

I am a fan of Hard Sci-Fi but I think the author over did it this time with the medical jargon that become intrusive to the storyline.
Still, Ian Douglas writes good military space opera and im looking forward to the next book in the series. ( )
