Ce livre a été écrit par une allemande, vivant maintenant en Autriche, née en Corée, et il parle du Groenland. Cela peut sembler bizarre mais en fait, non car Anna Kim a vécu plusieurs mois dans une famille là-bas et à la suite cette expérience, elle a publiée "une enquête sur les conséquences de la colonisation danoise au nord du cercle polaire". Elle a utilisé ce séjour et un fait divers comme matière pour ce livre.

En effet, "dans la nuit du 31 août au 1er septembre 2008, 11 personnes se donnèrent la mort dans une petite ville perdue du Groenland oriental". Ce livre parle du même type de fait : le suicide en une nuit qui s'égraine tout le long du livre d'une dizaine de personnes. Une fois n'est pas coutume, je vais commencer parce qui est raté à mon avis : la différentiation des personnages. L'histoire le veut mais elle parle de plus d'une vingtaine de personnages. J'ai du arriver à reconnaître facilement à peine la moitié (le SDF, les jeunes, le flic, l'adolescente amoureuse ...). J'ai éprouvé des problèmes pour les autres (souvent les femmes adultes), car ils avaient tous plus ou moins la même histoire (l'abandon de l'enfant, du pays, des problèmes de famille ...) J'ai pu améliorer ma mémorisation des personnages en lisant le livre plus au calme mais voilà, soit il faut prendre des notes, lire le livre religieusement, sinon on s'y perd. Je vous aurai prévenu.

Je vais quand même lever une inquiétude : les personnages ont quand même une certaine profondeur. Ils ne sont pas décrits uniquement par rapport à leurs actions durant cette nuit. Il y a des retours en arrière au moment fatidique ou avant, des liens qui s'établissent entre tous les personnages ; les évènements des jours précédents sont racontés aussi. Les personnages n'auraient pas été si difficiles à distinguer, j'aurais admirer la construction pour tout vous dire.

Maintenant, passons à ce qui m'a plu : l'impression d'immensité bridée par une impression d'étouffement. En effet, l'auteur commence souvent par décrire le paysage autour de la ville, la nuit, parfois la neige, le vent. L'auteur passe ensuite aux personnages et alors on sent une sorte de pression, de touffeur car leurs destins semblent sceller. L'immensité de la nature ne les libère pas. Il y a une sorte de fatalité qui leur tombe dessus. Ils n'arrivent pas à vivre "légèrement", à rigoler par exemple.

Une critique que j'ai lu sur internet mettait aussi le doigt sur autre chose : l'aspect anodin du suicide, pour des motifs qu'on ne comprend pas forcément. C'est la banalité de l'acte, la continuation de la vie : un moment la personne est là, puis le moment d'après elle n'est plus là. De tout le livre émane une certaine mélancolie.

On peut lire aussi ce livre avec une point de vue plutôt ethnologique car il décrit assez bien l'aspect et la vie d'une petite ville groenlandaise et parle d'un fait reconnu : l'"'épidémie de suicide" au Groenland. Le fait que le livre soit un roman apporte à mon avis plus puisqu'il tente de nous faire comprendre le pourquoi des ces suicides et accessoirement de ces solitudes. ( )

"...isn't it a fallacy to believe that an individual life only has meaning for itself? Just as an individual death makes little sense when isolated from the lives of others."

Love, isolation, natural beauty, and a suicide epidemic are all part of life in in a remote town in Greenland. How are eleven suicides in one night related to one another and to the larger society? While the deaths all take place in one village of 1,500 people, through flashbacks we see the larger picture of the Greenlanders connections (and dis-connections) with each other, with the village, and with Denmark.

Kim's words reveal the geographical landscape and also the internal landscape of the individuals. The village is "a place that swallows you up." For Sara suicide "... was a kind of shield of protection, the layer between her own skin and the skin of the world, one that would keep everything away from her." ( )

In ihrem Roman „Anatomie des Todes“ hat Anna Kim der Einsamkeit eine Stadt geschenkt: Amarâq, ein fiktiver Ort in Grönland, in der die Einsamkeit sich zu einem alles einhüllenden Organismus auswächst und alle anderen Einwohner neben ihr als Gäste erscheinen. Anna Kim beschreibt sehr zurückhalten und doch eindringlich in schönen, teils verstörenden Bildern eine Nacht in der elf Menschen freiwillig den Tod suchen. Diese Auslöschungen vollziehen sich im Buch leise, undramatisch, manche von ihnen ließen sich beinahe überlesen.

Beim Lesen treibt man oft im Ungewissen, ahnungslos wessen Geschichte einem erzählt wird. Zu viele Namen die einem begegnen ohne dass man sie in Beziehung setzen kann, woran auch ein Personenverzeichnis am Anfang des Buches nichts ändert, da es nur Alter und Beruf vermerkt, nicht aber die jeweilige Rolle im Roman. Die Geschichte wechselt Perspektive, manchmal von Absatz zu Absatz, und diese Verwirrung, diese Bindungslosigkeit, die sich erst im Verlauf des Buches löst wenn sie es überhaupt je tut, ist Programm. Fast alle Figuren im Roman befinden sich auf der Suche nach Müttern, Vätern, nach ihren Kindern - nach einer Form der Bindung und Herkunft die vielleicht bewirken würde das auch das Leben bindender erschiene, während sie isoliert im Dunkel der Stadt dahin- und aneinander vorbei treiben.

„Anatomie des Todes“ ist kein leicht zugängliches Buch. Fast möchte man am Ende des Buches noch einmal von vorn beginnen, diesmal mit einem Stift in der Hand um sich die Verknüpfungspunkte zu notieren und so das Dickicht Romans ein wenig zu lichten. Vielleicht wäre eine Novelle dem Thema und der Sprache Anna Kims gerechter geworden als ein Roman dies wird . Ein Rezensent der „Zeit“ soll beim Lesen verzweifelt „zu viel, zu viel!“ ausgerufen haben und vielleicht hat er recht. Und doch: ein sprödes Kunstwerk ist er geworden dieser Roman, getragen von einer Sprache die ebenso eigen wie poetisch ist.

In 2008 fifteen young adults tried to kill themselves within five hours in a small city in Greenland. Anna Kim travelled to Greenland and talked to the population, because she wanted to find out about the reasons and motives behind the high suicide rate there. Anatomie einer Nacht is the result of her research: A drama in five acts, but without climax, only with a penetrating monotony. Kim tells us the story of a mortal epidemic where eleven inhabitants kill themselves within five hours. The relations between the people are partly stronger, partly weaker – sometimes a glance is just enough to get “infected”.

Anatomie einer Nacht is not an easy read.

First, because of the topic and the very depressing atmosphere of the book: Kim describes a loneliness which is heart-breaking. The nature in on Greenland is wasteland and so overwhelming that people are losing themselves in it - their bodies and souls merge with the surrounding. (One of my thoughts was that if I wouldn’t have known that it takes place in Greenland, if the country wouldn’t have been named directly, it could have been a landscape in a dystopian novel.) Because of the Danish colonisation they lost their identity and never won it back. Their lives up to now where sad and brutal and the future won’t bring any change.

Second, Kim’s narrating style requires getting used to. There’s no chronological order and she jumps back and forth in time. There are so many different protagonists, but they are not characterised strongly, so it’s hard to remember them and their links to other characters. Until the moment when you realize that all these details about who-what-when-where are not so important, it’s a very annoying reading experience. Kim also wants too much: She presses so many topics apart from suicide into these 300 pages - it’s overwhelming. Personally I liked e.g. the reflection of the connection between day/night – visibility/invisibility – mortality/immortality which is a main thought throughout the novel. But Kim wears it out and until the ending it palls.

My feelings about the book are still very mixed: It is not a bad book, but I don’t really like it. As a consequence rating and recommending it is very difficult – I dare you trying it yourself! ( )

Eine ganz besondere und auch besonders traurige Nacht ist Thema in Anna Kims neuem Roman. Vom 31. August auf den 1. September 2008 nahmen sich in einer kleinen Stadt im verarmten Osten Grönlands elf Menschen das Leben. Die Autorin kreiert ihre „Anatomie einer Nacht“ mit elegant erzählten Lebensbildern ihrer Hauptfiguren. Eine eindringliche Bildersprache, kunstvoll präsentiert. Eine literarische Antwort auf die Frage: „Wie konnte so etwas geschehen?“
