In this book, Angelou details what brought her mother to send her away, and unearths the well of emotions she experienced long afterward as a result. For the first time, she reveals the triumphs and struggles of being the daughter of Vivian Baxter, an indomitable spirit whose petite size belied her larger-than-life presence, a presence absent during much of the author's early life. When her marriage began to crumble, Vivian famously sent three-year-old Maya and her older brother away from their California home to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. Their reunion a decade later began a story that has never before been told.… (meer)

I enjoyed this quick read. A fascinating life story, though it seemed to jump around in time. I loved learning about these strong women. Ms Angelou comes from hardy root stock. It made me want to explore more of her work. ( )

I know that Maya Angelou is an icon, and she’s written some brilliant memoirs of her rich, surprising, and varied life, but I couldn’t help but think that in this book about her relationship with her mother, she was just phoning it in. Many of the anecdotes she shares are repeated from other volumes. The writing, which is primarily in short, declarative sentences, is not memorable. This book is not at all comparable to Angelou’s best work. ( )

I just love Maya Angelou! I have always loved her poetry and the movies that she has been in. I did not know however, that she was an actress, dancer and singer prior to writing. I thought the acting came because of her wonderful way with words and powerful speaking voice. I knew that her mother had left her with relatives in Arkansas, but I did not know that they had reunited. This is a love story between mother and children. Two very strong women. I admire them both greatly. ( )

If you're interested in Maya Angelou's life this is a good book to read. It tells a lot about her life in relation to her mother. They had a trouble relationship at times and a wonderful one at others. ( )

I read this too quickly. The short snappy style is wonderful to allow Maya Angelou's voice to punch through the page, but is best heard in smaller doses. However it's impossible to put down as you just want more and more.... remarkable people, remarkable times. And such hearts and minds. ( )

The first decade of the twentieth century was not a great time to be born black and poor and female in St. Louis, Missouri, but Vivian Baxter was born black and poor, to black and poor parents.
