( ) Hairy Harry’s Car Seat is book one in the series, "Lyon Road Vets." It takes place in England and is about Peter Mitchell, a divorced man living on his own with his old dog Harry, and Evan Wells a new veterinarian in town. This story is told in third person through Peter’s eyes. As a warning, I have to mention right off the bat that Peter’s dog Harry, dies within the first twenty pages of the book. So if you don’t like sad pet scenes you might not want to read this. Peter took Harry with him when he divorced his ex, Toni. Harry has been Peter’s only friend but Harry is old. After taking Harry to the vet’s because Harry is getting worse, Peter meets the substitute vet Evan, who tells him Harry isn’t going to get better, so Peter takes him home. Evan later stops by and puts Harry to sleep. Evan keeps in contact with Peter because Peter is devastated and alone. Evan is also lonely because his boyfriend Joey is almost never home. The MC’s grow to have a good friendship. Peter likes Evan’s company but Evan wants more. Peter is surprised when Evan expresses that interest and there’s tension between them. Evan keeps pressing for more and Peter is stuck in thinking he’s straight because he is very attracted to women. But it turns out Peter is also growing slowly attracted to Evan. Now some readers might say this is a gay for you situation. Evan says that Peter is bi. I tend to agree with Evan. Peter is mostly attracted to women, but he knows he’s growing attracted to Evan. His attraction wasn’t instant lust, but one of friendship that grew. The thing is, Evan pushes Peter each step of the way, wanting more. Peter reacts with hesitation and fear. I have to mention that both men are older, Peter about forty and Evan slightly younger. Peter has gone through life thinking he’s straight so he’s finding it difficult to change his thinking. I think the author did a realistic job with Peter’s caution, hesitation and resistance, to the idea of being with a man. There was no magic, “This guy is hot! I’m gay!” from Peter. Also, I found Evan’s pushiness, because he wanted Peter, realistic. I thought he should have been more patient with Peter, but at the same time I believe a person would behave like Evan in pushing someone if they wanted a relationship with them. I think the actions of the MCs were probably one of the most real I’ve read for such a situation. The book is mostly about how Peter and Evan deal with Peter’s hesitation and hang-ups and Evan’s impatience. It also deals with Peter telling Evan he won’t have an affair with him as long as he’s with Joey. The situation with Evan and Joey is an interesting switcheroo that surprised me, but I liked how the author wrote it. It wasn’t gone into deeply but it explained what was happening between Evan and Joey. A few other things happen to Peter and Evan separately that you’ll have to read the story to find out. This is a very fast read focusing on the MCs rather than events that propel the characters, except for Harry at the beginning. I found the characters realistic. There are a few SPAG errors but not so many to take me out of the story. I intend to read the rest of the series. I give Hairy Harry’s Car Seat, 4 Stars This was a very, very sweet GFY. There is a slow building relationship with lovely characters that develop beautifully in the story. I found Peter's responses to his unexpected attraction to Evan very well done. Evan was (apart from a minor hiccup) was sympathetic as well. The story is sweet and quite romantic. It has a pacing that I find very consistent with the length of the book. Of course I would have preferred it to be a lot longer, but then I'm always greedy like that! geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
