On her way to visit her daughter in a distant Indian village, Grandma perilously encounters fox, bear and tiger. They all want to eat her, but she is sly enough to outwit them all.

Grandma leaves her two dogs and lush garden behind to visit her daughter and grandkids. On the way a fox, bear, and tiger want to eat her, but she tells them to wait until she comes back, because she is too skinny now, and will be plumper upon her return. Grandma and her daughter disguise her as a gourd for her return home, which she hides inside of on her way rolling through the forest. The bear and tiger fall for the trick, but the fox does not. The fox, however, is scared off by grandma's loyal dogs who defend her after she calls out to them. This book is a great story about bravery and loyalty. Grandma is a loveable trickster children will admire. The illustrations are super bright, vivid, and elaborate. Children will be immersed in them as they read along. This traditional tale was fun to read. I can picture this being taught alongside other trickster tales like Coyote: A Trickster Tale from the American Southwest by Gerald McDermott and Possum Come a-Knockin by Nancy Laan.

Genre: Folklore/Fairytale
Sub-Genre: Picture Book

Grandma traveled through the jungle to visit her daughter and along the way she encountered animals that wanted to eat her, but she tricked them into waiting. Once she was traveling home from her daughter's house, she sat inside a gourd to hide from the animals. Children would enjoy this book because of the vivid illustrations and the mystery behind Grandma returning home. Teachers could teach a lesson on repetition and demonstrate to the students how it is used in a variety of ways. ( )

A grandma is traveling to visit her daughter and she tricks animals who try to eat her by telling them that they should wait to eat her on the way back when she has fattened up. On the way back she seals herself in the gourd to sneak past them.

It was a good story the grandmother had a clever trickster vibe going on. It had the classic folktale/fairytale repetition. My favorite characters were the dogs.
