In the novel the escapee is General Alain de Forge and it covers the initial capture of the general, his abrasive initial interactions with German command, the search for an escape route, the planning for escape and the eventual escape after which a good portion of the novel details his attempts to neutral or allied territory.
Whilst it's not earth shattering and doesn't tread any new ground in the world war 2 prisoner escape genre it was still an entertaining and pleasant afternoon read that was rather enjoyable. There's also a subplot of redemption for the young gentleman assigned at the last moment to assist in his escape that developed nicely along with the main story arc.
If you like world war 2 stories, you'll likely enjoy this. ( )
