While rereading volume 1 of this China Mieville-written graphic novel, I learned that there was a volume 2. There seem to be many more artists for this book, but the overall look is much the same. Having survived the events of volume 1, Nelson and Roxie continue to seek after the mysteries of the superpower-borrowing dials, and to stay ahead of the mysterious figure who wanders the multiverse shutting the dials down. We see a lot more of the multiverse here, along with a great many new superpowers for our protagonists to acquire, plus a suitably villainous new antagonist. This was the last volume, and the story ends on a satisfying stopping point. Great fun here again to see Mieville's imagination on display. The books might be a good introduction to him for a comics fan who hasn't read his novels or stories, but most Club Read denizens would do best to start with one of the novels - [The City and The City] would be my suggestion. I love a lot of China Mieville's writing mostly because of the originality. You'll never find a dwarf or an elf in his fantasy stuff and his non-fantasy stuff is even stranger than his fantasy stuff. The problem with this series is the same as other attempts at originality - sometimes it just gets too weird. The other problem, for me because I'm American, is that I think much of the humor was British, so I didn't get it. Like the hero "Cock-a-hoop" basically a rooster with a hula hoop, which I just looked up and it says "British" before it. So the humor fell flat sometimes for me. If the heroes were only in a frame or 2 no big deal but "Open Window Man" ended up being a main character and he just looked so stupid it was distracting from the really cool plot.

Anyway, I loved the plot, I loved the 2 main characters, but things often got incomprehensible and there were silly heroes. That puts this firmly in 3-star territory for me. Which is disappointing because I was really hoping I would love it. ( )

Started out great and went the way of most Mieville I've tried before. Totally went Kablooey. He put too many new characters and bogged down the protagonist and antagonist until I couldn't tell what was happening to anyone. Oh well. ( )

Dial H Vol. 2: Exchange collects issues 7-15 of the DC 52 reboot of Dial H for Hero, plus the series’ epilogue (Justice League 23.3: Dial E). It was written by China Miéville and drawn by Alberto Ponticelli and Dan Green.

Plot:
Nelson and Roxie are traveling around the world to try and figure out everything about the H-Dial they share and to maybe find a second one, so they don’t have to share anymore. As they are trying to uncover new things, they are hunted by Centipede, a Canadian spy who has his own powers and his own agenda.

It really is a pity that this series was cancelled already. It had so much promise. And I really enjoyed the second volume, despite a slightly bumpy second half.

The first volume of this title I picked up just for the heck of it and I surprisingly (to me) found I liked it, so, with this second volume I wanted to find and read it on purpose.

I mean, the title is crazier than even the whole Animal Man/Swamp Thing Red/Green/Rot storyline, and yet it's such a fun read that dragged me on this crazy, sometimes hilarious, sometimes quite caring, journey.

I liked how Roxie and Nelson's relationship changed and flexed, not staying static, and then they get deep, deep into the dials. What they are, where they're from, how they work. We even meet a group that calls itself the Dial Bunch.

They're trying to beat a guy called the Fixer, who's teamed up (sorta) with a bad guy (with non-dial powers) called Centipede. And then someone called 'O' is introduced and everything goes even more crazy.

A solid three star TPB and quite the ride. Just don't think about the plot too hard, or you'll get lost pretty fast.

I won this through the Goodreads First Read giveaways. ( )
