Whether it's having to remove tags from clothing or using special dimmed lighting when they study, kids with sensory disorders or special sensory needs often need adaptations in their everyday lives in order to find success in school and beyond. Taking a look at the most common sensory issues kids face, Raising Kids with Sensory Processing Disorders offers a compilation of unique, proven strategies parents can implement to help their children move beyond their sensory needs and increase their performance on tasks like homework, field trips, transitions between activities, bedtime, holidays, and interactions with friends. Written by a parent of two children with very different sensory needs, the book shows parents how to characterize their child's sensory issues into one of several profiles that they can then use to find the best adaptations and changes to their everyday routines.… (meer)

I did not realize I never reviewed this. I received this through the Early Reviewers program a few years ago. I read it and found it somewhat helpful, at least professionally. However the suggestions are more for parents or other that see the child on a daily basis. But this is where I have a problem with this book, it is way too technical for most parents I worked with. I would recommend this book to professionals to get a good idea of things to suggest to a parent but not a parent as it seems to be intended. ( )

This book was very good and described the maladies very well. It was so good that I passed it along to a friend who has a child with the disorder for them to find help.

This book offers a wealth of activities, projects, tips, and suggestions for helping children with sensory processing difficulties get through day-to-day family and school life. One aspect about the book that I particularly appreciated was the emphasis on FQoL: Family Quality of Life. So often, parenting and child health books focus on the needs of the child without considering the context of the family and without addressing the child's impact on family dynamics (and vice versa). The strategies and tips offered here are, for the most part, wholly doable. For my family, they are a godsend.

I did find the introductory information about Sensory Processing Disorder to be quite cursory. For a fuller introduction, read Jean Ayres or Lucy Jane Miller. Then return to this book as a friendly and useful hands-on manual. This book is a must-have for any sensory challenged household! ( )

I requested this book thru the Librarythings early reviewers Program. I have a son who Has Autism , ADHD . And sensory disorters. I love this book It has alot of activities to do with your child. It has ideas to get thru daily activities , Social particpation I love this chapter. It gives you ideas on how to get your child to participate. How to get through bath time, dinners, family get togethers. Over all this is a good book if you are looking for ideas on how to cope with childrenwith Autism and sensory disorters. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has a child with autism or senory disorters. ( )

I received a free copy of "Raising Kids with Sensory Processing Disorders" by Rondalyn Whitney and Varleisha Gibbs through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. I have a child with a sensory disorder and was looking forward to reading this one, but ended up disappointed.

I found the opening chapters to be more academic in nature than helpful-- this book would probably be better suited to an occupational therapist than a parent. I don't really need to know all the cognitive ins and outs of sensory processing disorders -- I just want tips to help make my child's life easier.

The second half of the book has 52 activities to help your child. Unfortunately for me, my child is too young for many of these activities (my child does not speak... playing red light, green light or Mother May I is not in the realm of possibility.) It would have been nice if the activity suggestions were organized by age range.

This may be a good resource for an occupational therapist or possibly for a parent of an older child with sensory processing disorder but it wasn't a good fit for a parent of a young child. ( )
