I expected to be able to relate to it in some aspects, at least. I did not. I thought that, while Carter's writing is generally very accomplished, her plot points left much to be desired. She seems to be writing with a view to realism, but there were points that were just peculiar enough to make me think she was going to pull it together as surrealism. I was not a stripper during the period in question, but my then-husband and I did own several working class bars in the San Fernando Valley at the time, and so of course we knew a number of strippers. Stevie/Gwendolyn is simply not credible as a stripper. By this, I mean that none of the details of her job were believable. She stripped to Louis Armstrong and Tom Waits. She might smoke a little weed but that's it as far as drugs go. Her employers were nice and understanding, and joked about taking it out in trade when she's late but didn't really mean it.
